  • Accepted a job offer

So I accepted the job offer that Capital One gave me. It involves a pretty ludicrous sum of money. But they also gave me a $15k signing bonus that I'm supposed to get by March or April or so. I also don't start until mid-July, but I graduate in mid-May, so that means I have $15k extra in my pocket and 2 months with nothing to do.

Now, if I quit before I've worked for them for a full year, I have to give the $15k back. So obviously the reason they're giving me (and presumably all of their new employees) the money and all the free time right after graduation is so that we'll spend it and then won't be able to quit because we won't be able to pay back the 15 grand. However I actually have more than 15k saved up so even if I spent it all I could still pay them back...

I'll probably end up saving the money anyway because I'm a miserly demi-Jew who views his checking account balance as a high score, but as a semi-serious request does anyone have ideas for cool places to travel to and blow 15k over the course of two months? Hookers and blow are not an option since I'd like to still have my job when I get back.

    Thanks

If you don't spend it on hookers and blow, you might not still have that job.

It's a software engineering job in Tysons, not an investment banking job on Wall Street.

I would put all the money into OHI

Invest $15k in an individual stock ticker I've never heard of? Now that's some sound financial advice

But let's hear some names of cool places to travel to.

                Hookers OR Blow?

My first question to you is what do you want most out of a vacation?

I would go to Rome with a side trip to Pompeii, then up to Florence, then over to Venice, and then ending in Milan.

You may not have heard of OHI, but I would highly recommend doing your research on it. There is a decent chance you and your brothers will end up sending your parents to an associated facility.

The pyramids. It's an impressive wonder of the world. And you might broaden your horizon in terms of how you view Arabs.

That sounds interesting but I think I'll prioritize places of the world less likely to get me killed. Egypt would have been a much better idea 5 years ago.

I'm thinking I might visit Israel again, but I've already been there once.

Yes, I haven't been there in about 7 or so years and even then we had armed guards, but it was worth it to ride camels out and eat dinner right next to them.

You ate dinner right next to the camels, rah? That had to stink.

HC, I recommend that you should cover the basics of Europe -- London, Paris, Rome, maybe a few other spots. For about $5k, you can have a pretty posh, minimal risk trip in an area where you won't look horribly out of place. Learn not to be the ugly American.

My daughter strongly recommends Malta BTW. More world heritage sites per square mile than anywhere else in the world.

                          Congrats on the gig.

Travel Europe and get some culture to suck in. The Interrail tickets are an amazing way to travel Europe.
