The official Freeciv forums have been down for over a week now, so I though this should be announced somewhere on the web: Freeciv 2.0.8 is out! It fixes several outstanding bugs, including the one that caused translated string be corrupted on Windows; improved authentification on Pubserver; airlifting bug; improved localizations etc. It's also the intermediate version between the venerable 2.0 line and the upcoming 2.1, and have the ability to load save games created with 2.1. Get...
Just a brief announcement: Freeciv 2.1.0-beta3 is here! We get more eye-candy and better stability. What more is there to wish for? :b: Visit www.freeciv.org for more details!
Freeciv can now be played on Android smart phones. Freeciv is a turn based open source version of the classic game Civilization. The polish developer Michal "Zielmicha" Zielinski is working on a Freciv version for Android devices. However, his Freeciv port is not complete yet, but curious strategy fan can already test it. The last prerelease version 1.0.2 was relased at the end of October. It contains a first support for diplomacy and a faster scolling over the game map. Additionally, a...
Hello , I have Windows 98 and I wonder where I can find a valid version for windows. I tried downloading 1.14 version from official site , but there are just .c files and no .exe .
I recently had the Fantasy modpack updated for Freeciv 2.1. It still uses old-fashioned 'trident'-style graphics, so I figured I could put together some cool graphics for it from the work of the talented folks at the Scenario League! Here's the result. Unzip into your favorite Freeciv folder; grab the images below and put them into the newly created amptasy/ folder. Then run 'civclient -t amptasy'. Note that this is just a tileset, so you need the modpack rulesets installed as well....
Hello everyone, It's now possible to play Freeciv.net online at http://www.freeciv.net/. It is a port of Freeciv which can be played online in your web browser. You can play both single-player games and multiplayer games. The game is still under development, so any feedback is very much appreciated. If you like the game, you can also contribute to the project. Andreas R.
Curious: Can the tech tree in FreeCiv be modified without rewriting a lot of the code? That is, is it stored in some type of file that can be altered with only moderate effort? If the tech tree can be altered, then it would probably be easy to make up any number of variation games. I'm personally think of Alpha Centauri, but I'm sure other fantasy and sci-fi scenario, or even alternate Earths, could be done. If this has been discussed elsewhere, please direct me accordingly. I'm new...

I have version 2.0.10 of Freeciv but can't figure out how to get to work. i want to play against other people online. When I open civclient.exe and click on connect it says "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it." When I click on Metaserver and Update it lists a few games hosted on other servers but I can't see how to join them.
FreeCiv is a very good alternative to Civilization. Nobody here play it?
I made an "old style" looking tileset for Freeciv: http://odsiebie.com/pokaz/1322142---6b80.html It`s CivWin terrain with Civ2 trident units. This is uncompleted yet (beta version; beta=bugs). You can play Civ2 mode in "traditional" Civ1 (non-iso) way. Have a fun!
Version 2.1.4 is now out, and can be downloaded at http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page Full changelist is available here or on the website. Enjoy!
Lifted from the announcement email: :) ___________________ Dear Freeciv Fans, On behalf of the dedicated Freeciv Dev Team, I proudly present the golden release of Freeciv 2.1.0. This is a major release and the result of two years of intensive (at least in periods) development. A big thanks to everyone who donated patches, bug reports, ideas, and not least a big chunk of their free time!
This is a unit pack for the Ancients modpack v2.1.0-1 for Freeciv. Unzip into your Freeciv directory and start the client with 'civclient -t ampcients'. Grab the modpack itself from ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/contrib/modpacks/ancients/ancients-2.1.0-1.tar.bz2 Author of the sprites in units.png is fairline and ships.png is by BeBro. Enjoy!
You can now play Freeciv in Longturn (1 turn per day) mode. This means more players (up to 30, because lag is no issue in longturn), more time for micromanagement and the most interesting diplomacy you've ever experienced. New Longturn servers are started regularly, and subscription can be done here: www.longturn.org . Please note that because longturn games take several months to complete, you may sometimes have to wait a while before being able to play. But it's worth it ;) At this moment...
For those interested a new 2.0.9 FC release is available at the Freeciv site
The second beta release of Freeciv's 2.1 series has been released this weekend! Many serious bugs in the previous release has been fixed, plus some slight graphical updates. Visit www.freeciv.org to grab a new fresh source tarball or windoze .exe :naughty:
I´ve converted 30+ maps from Civ2 to FC. You can download them from the Freeciv discussion thread in the Scenario league. http://www.apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=151840&pagenumber=3
I reckoned this deserved it's own thread: Freeciv 2.1-beta1 released. Grab the source code from freeciv.org Unofficial Win32 builds available at http://ftpwww.freeciv.org/freeciv/incoming/ For the SDL package, you'd want to get the SDL theme. See http://www.freeciv.org/index.php/Themes#SDL_part And for all of you who have complained Freeciv looks like a spreadsheet program, I warmly recommend you to check out the SDL package! :D
transform to ocean? while THIS would be sometimes handy, allowing "canals" and shortcuts for shipping i don't think that was your intention, (perhaps you could make a terrain transformation passable to shipping that could be canals) B. (the little isthmus i started on is down the bottom left of the minimap)
as some of you may already know, there is a great (in my opinion ;) 3D software outside, called "Blender" ( blender site ). a few months ago it has become open-source (it already was freeware before) and it is rapidly developing by now. i have started to create some 3d-graphics projects for freeciv, such as a new nuke animation, isometric city tiles and unit animations, which i have uploaded to the freeciv ftp server (nuke.tar.gz, iso_city_european.tar.bz2 and warrior.tar.bz2). i would like...
I'm compiling a tileset for Freeciv using Civ3 graphics. It is based on the "civ3gfx" tileset by Jason Short, which is basically a script that downloads a fanmade Civ3 terrain modpack from civfanatics.com and converts the images to transparent PNG. However civ3gfx notably lacks original graphics for resources, cities and units (using crude fallbacks for these) - my goal is to produce a tileset that looks as good as or better than Civ3! I have completed resources and begun work on...
Hi Folks, Having recently bought a new monitor, I am now running at a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. :D Personally I think that the existing tilesets (both trident and isotrident) look too small at this resolution. I prefer the non-isometric view, and also the isometric tileset looked more scary, so: I have made my own enlarged version of the trident tileset by scaling up the trident set from 30x30 sprites to 60x60 sprites, and edited the spec files to match. This new bigtrident...
I was wondering if it's possible to include such a feature for freeciv...
Some of you may have read this thread where I have been working on a high resolution version of the trident tileset. Rather than doing anything on the units, I instead spent some time on a <i>Tolkien Style</i> isometric tileset - see the screenshot on this post. While this probably wouldn't be to most peoples tastes for normal games, this would be good for some mod packs... So, is it worth my while pursuing this? And if so, any suggestions for Plains and grassland. As you can see,...
I understand there was code floating around out there for the nation of Barsoom for freeciv. It's not on freeciv.org's ftp site and I can't seem to find a working link on the board. Anyone wandering this dusty corridor have any notion where I might even find a .txt file with the info?? Thanx!!
Right after I downloaded and installed It has been non stop DO NOT DOWN LOAD THANKS FOR THE HEADACHE OF GETTING RID OF IT
I'm playing on my XP box and notice that there is no settings for sound in FreeCiv - and I don't hear any sound in the game. I turned on "Beep at end or turn" and I get a pc-speaker beep at the end of my turn. Is this right? No sound in FreeCiv for Windoze?
Is incredible, PBEM it would be great for freeciv. But "he" dont has it. I searched in freeciv forums, and there is much people who want that possibility. Why they don't develop this feature? like vgaplanets, or like civ3.

what the title says, congrats
I just got the July 2005 issue, and Freeciv 2.0.0 is listed among the featured mods on page 86. Just wondering why it's not in the news yet.
I haven't found a good place to learn about setting up a server, so maybe this is where I'll start? Currently I have freeciv running just fine on one machine (serverA). I have no problem connecting to the game with civclient on port 5555. The problem starts when I try to connect to the server from another machine (clientB). I just get the error connectinon refused If I start the server on the OTHER machine (serverB), then I can connect with clientB but get the same error if I try to...
Hi. I'm new in this forum, so I don't know if this is an old subject. I use to play old good freeciv, which came with Mandrake linux 8 or something, viewing direction strait to down. Mayby version 1.14. I wonder if anyone knows, is there possibility to transfer ocean to swamp? In the help topics at point "terrain alterations" is showed that it takes 24 turns to convert ocean to swamp, but I can find no circumstances where I could tell to Engineers to build land to ocean. Reply if You got...
I was a very good Civ2 and reasonably good Civ3 player. I just found Freeciv last week. I thought "this is cool." Then I played the game. Even at novice level, the AI builds techs, cities, wonders, like it's playing Diety level in Civ3. It crushes me every time, to the point where I'm going to just can the game and go back to commercial Civ. At least I have a chance there. Is there something I'm supposed to do when I set up a game that will make it playable?
There's a new beta out on the Freeciv site. There's also civ3gfx. Which can convert Civ3 graphics to Freeciv format. (not sure if Civ3gfx works in XP? can someone test this? ) The Win32 version ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/beta/Freeciv-2.0.0-beta2-win32.zip The native win GTK+ version (which also is starting to look can be found here) http://deepblue.sk/~r0b0/freeciv/freeciv2.0.0beta2.zip
(Hopefully now the picture will show) This is a new "look" for the Armor unit. What do you think?
COOL FEATURES BELOW! So many new possibilities! Now subs can be usable units. Who will add these features?! This applies also for other civs. Submarines should have special abilities: a) be totally invisible for all other players units unless this other player research sonar. So you can track movement of enemy convoy and attack with other units (even by other players with shared vision). So you an check from where enemy is sending his convoys and prepare ambush :) b) nuclear...
I would like to purpose a change to trade. 1. Do away with trade routes and caravans helping building wonders 2. Caravans and freight should carry production, food, and trade. (maybe 25 for the caravan and 50 for fright) 3. Every city with a marketplace would be allowed to store up food and production, in a "market" for pick up by a caravan.
Hi, - Is possible play by email in Freeciv? - Exists any port of freeciv to WindowsCe (PopcketPC, PDA's)? Greetings
A quick test to see how double res looks:
Hi I know the game and the small and large pox but dose anyone play like the old civ2? in the sence that you build your empire then go to war when you can build large armys?
