Face the facts.......
FIRST: Russia is almost rush proof....... early on if you destroy their supply wagon(easy), their invasion is guaranteed to fail
SECOND: The Russians are the ONLY nation which can effectivley turtle(make all your defenses buildings) without a military. All that are needed is a good set of forts/towers and spies.
Have spies on the flanks of where the attack will come from, along with scouts further out(to kill enemy scouts, though I'd say 50% of people dont even bring scouts with their armies!). Russian calvalry does an extra 25% damage to supply wagons and siege weapons. Well capture the enemy siege weapons with your spies, and if you have any extra spies left, capture their heavy or light calvalry to kill their supply wagon! Then the enemy can go bang his heads to death on your fortifications, as attrition slowly does him in, not to mention the damage of a fort and 2 or 3 towers!
IF you have alot of extra spies(later on besides my spy "ring" for defense send out a group of 6 to lay in wait) go to undefended enemy military buildings can capture his guys as he makes them, OR just put them between your base and his, and try to capture his army en-route!(gotta keep moving to do this, and after the first time you'll need scouts to take out his).
THIRD: Russia has superiority over the most pain in the ### resource on the map: oil. The gathering rate is a lifesave.
FOURTH: Russia has the best end-game infantry, and their modern age rocket siege unit is fantastic.
