Yeah, If you look closely while fighting, You can see that 15 volksgrenadiers against 15 infantry-the volksgrenadier hit more damage, and receive less damage onto the Infantry, even though They have the same atack, cost, and build speed. That is because the infantry has more vulnerability when fighting Volks. that is as if the Volks have a basical bonus against infantry, or any other unit.
This is just a basic example, however some units like the Mongol horde are excpetionally useful, because they have an increased bonus versus infantry and vilagers, and take less attrition. Mongolia is a very good rush civ, for a rush lover player (like me) but it is no good for long drawn out games, against experienced players. Or try taking some legions and move them on the enemy pikemen. when i did my classical 18 on 18, czarlegion vs pike all pikemen were dead, and there were 15 legions remaining. That does make a big difference!
The Romans are actually very effective against infantry, and it is the best medieval-gunpowder change civ because if you mass legions with javileneers, the legions will cut down the front line soldiers (inf.cavs.)and the javeslineers will get the archers. Whe you get Gunpowder, the javilenners turn into Arcs. Even though I rarely use the Romans in MP or SP, this example combination of UU and Normal U, can be very effective an devastating.
Once again, however, the Romans and the Mongols are not much good after Gunpowder anyway, because they have not got very good specific traits required for later ages, and if they play russians or germans in the modern(industrial,Modern,Information)ages, their units and resouces will soon be cut down by the superior Modern UU's and Modern age civ bonuses [of the better civs].
In conclusion, I do think that the units and bonuses were picked very well in RoN, and by knowing the strategies, every civ can be very deadly (mmmaybe except greeks)
