        Right, so if it's hard-coded into the border line, it might work well.

          They don't have to implement walls like AoE.

            They could have dynamic walls that conform to the buildings in your city radius. So if I build a market outside of the wall, the wall updates to include the market. It could be an effect that stops after a certain age, which would give the "old city"/"new city" look (and might provide impetus to build your infrasructure up early)

              modern cities could have tank trap moats and trenchs around them in wartime. That would be cool.
