  • Interface Insights (and little features not explained elsewhere):

    Here's a few of mine:

DOUBLE click on idle villagers button: selects ALL idle villagers at once no matter where they are. Handy for building wonders quickly.

Upper right of screen where the resource caps are displayed- look carefully: there're arrows not expanded yet- you can expand it and it shows you your potentials. In other words: 4/5 caravans, 20/23 mines, etc... This one isn't in the manual, and those expansion arrows are small. Once in awhile in a HIGE empire this is a handy thing to check.

Here's one: ctrl-shift-1 through 9 controls the data display on the lower right part of the map (above the currently selected unit/building section). My favorites are ctrl-shift-1 for score and diplomatic status, ctrl-shift-2 for economic details (number of farmers, number of merchants, number of idle citizens etc.), and ctrl-shift-4 for military details (number of each type of unit and unit production building).
Firaxis - please make an updated version of Colonization! That game was the best, even if it was a little un-PC.

        Along that line:

        Select your entire army: ctrl-1.
Select just the knights in the army. Ctrl-2

So now your knights are 2, the army (WITH knights) is 1. Cool that units can belong to two groups (though this
may be common in RTS's I don't play many since AoK).

You can also ****f-click on the display of unit boxes so select ONLY units of that type in there.

Clicking through all the tips in the game is gruesome, and there isn't even some text file for me to cut & paste the really important ones. I suppose I'll have to write those critical ones down tomorrow.

Don't forget, there are 3 more little arrows to the *left* of the resourses that will actually show you market prices!

If you have a unit selected, press the "home" key to select all of that unit on the map.

Here's something I stupidly didn't realise for ages.

If you have a building selected which is not currently visible on the map, you can scroll to it by clicking its picture in the information display at the bottom centre of the screen.

(Anyone know if there's a hotkey to scroll the map to the currently selected building or unit?)

Excellent idea for a thread. I believe that RoN has the most fantastic interface for a RTS game, just a shame there are some feautures not documented.

                  Another way to select groups:

when you have two groups (1&2) you can hit the 1 key, then shift-2 to select both. That way you can easily move the non-cavalry element (1) and the cavalry element (2) without (1) being comprised of both. Handy to reposition your main line in the heat of battle without distrubing your cavalry in their ambush position.

                    Another I like:

When moving a group and you right click- hold down the button. You probably already know you can aim your formation by moving the mouse now, but: the WHEEL will NARROW and WIDEN the formation. The LEFT button will change the types of formation.

Hit period (.) 3 times quickly to select ALL your Villagers.

Stumbled across that one by pure accident.

Don't hold your breath, hoju. I already tried that, and all you can do is put them in column (multiple units behind one another). You cannot spread your single 3-figure unit to double-width (skirmish line).

Another one that you probably know but that is a blessing.
Select your Stable/barracks/Factory and set the way point (Right Click) to a General. All future created unit will join the General and his group.
Also work with the wonder creating Light infantry.
