  • Appreciation thread: Thanks BHG for a great game!

I think that Rise of Nations is a really fun game!

So, I thought I'd start an appreciation thread where everyone who is enjoying RoN can express their thanks to BHG for making such a cool game.

Thanks BHG for a great game!
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Of course, I'm giving the 500 page Civ3 WishList all the credit. This had nothing to do with RoN, mind you, but it was a lot of typing...

Seriously: BHG has come out of the gate running. With what looks to be fantastic follow-up and involvement from Brian himself, looks like we've got some very fun months ago.

    Bravo!

So, BHG, what's your next project?
Firaxis - please make an updated version of Colonization! That game was the best, even if it was a little un-PC.

And do you need any local beta testers?

Perhaps that 500 page Civ3 Wishlist or IOW all the complaining on the boards about Civ3 when it first came out had something to do with RoN being so good. Brian may have been silently watching and learning what not to do for his game.

It is possible that RoN is real time Civ3 but without TBS Civ3 problems.

I was all happy in my PlanetSide MMO beta world until the beta ran out... as it turned out I wouldn't have any cash to buy it until the end of the month.

Lo and behold, I downloaded the RoN trial, and now I have 2 games to buy Damn you, BHG

Seriously, not since the original Crusader have I found an RTS to be so engrossing. While the default tech advance speed is a bit fast, I am looking forward to the full version so I can slow it down a bit, to make the game more epic. I do applaud Brian for designing a game where you truly can take a civilization from infancy to space in an hour or so.

I was a huge fan of Civ2 , and I continue to play Brian Reynolds' Alpha Centauri on a monthly basis. As has been mentioned, this game is an incredible first effort... and I'm really looking forward to the full version later this month, and many more games from BHG in the future.

Every now and then, a game comes along that reminds me why I like games... and this is the one right now.

                  Thanks for the great game.

I know many wil disagree (and already have in this forum) but I think this is the best RTS game since Total Anihilation. TA has always been my favorite and I haven't been playing RoN long enough to know if it will have the same longevity, but it's a fine piece of craftsmanship. Oh, and BTW, I've seen some people complaining about the graphics. I think they're stellar. Now lets bug BHG for more map types!

Fixing RON is their next big project. You'll get your kudos when I can play CTW. CTW was the main reason I bought the game.

Yes, BIG HUGE THANKS for taking the risk and time to release a masterly game like that - accessible and rich at the same time. RoN remembers me to the good old times where computer games meant passion in the first place and not just a business.

Anyway, what is VSYNC and how can I turn it off?

Try looking in the .ini files, Tass (rise.ini and rise2.ini, both in RoN main directory). I suppose there is a line "vsync=1" or something like that. Change it to zero and see what happens. Or maybe it is in the graphics .ini file... I don't know.
