  • Contest: "The Galaxy is Listening" On Now!

Participation may never have been as valuable to computer gamers before now. Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS) and Stardock Systems are teaming up to bring you "The Galaxy is Listening", a Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords contest where asking questions and making comments on the game could bring in a prize from a table worth more than $800US. Over the period March 15th-22nd, 2006, those who contribute to discussions about GalCivII on Apolyton's forums can earn one to three points for letting their keyboard do the talking.

To participate, users first register for a free forum account and then post their uestions or comments in one of the three GalCivII forums on Apolyton depending upon its topic. Users who post a meaningful GalCivII comment otherwise earn one point, while a meaningful question on the game is worth two points. Three points can be earned by users who post a meaningful question or comment in direct response to one of the development team's "GalCivII" journals, or one of their other poots, in these same forums.

The top ten pariticipants will will be randomly drawn to receive either a TotalGaming Network membership, which can be used to 'purchase' a copy of GalCivII, or a Collector's Edition of the game. "Stardock is thrilled to work with [Apolyton] and to provide these copies of Totalgaming.net and GalCivII to a site that has always been so supportive of the gaming community", says Stardock Founder/President Brad Wardell. Wardell was also the Project Lead on the game. Adds ACS Co-Owner/Administrator Daniel "DanQ" Quick, "we are excited to increase the exposure of GalCivII in the Apolyton community and beyond through this contest, and thank Stardock for their encouragement and participation in this effort".

The prize table does not end with Stardock! The first place participant will also receive a lifetime subscription to ApolytonPLUS (PLUS), ACS' optional subscription service. Additionally a three-year subscription will be awarded to the participant with the second most number of points, two-years for third place, and one-year for both fourth and fifth place participants. These prizes from ACS alone are worth an average of $260US in total; further, users not in the top five with 1-9 points apiece will receive that many number of months subscribed to PLUS. That's a maximum value of $18US per eligible participant ($12US for six and $6US for three more months).

By participating users agree that, if eligible for a prize from Stardock, they will disclose within 72 hours of winning notification their name, email and mailing addresses and primary telephone number to Stardock through Apolyton for purposes of shipping and handling. Failure to do so within the time period requested will result in the automatic forfeiture of their prize. Whether or not a particular post is eligible for a number of points, and if so the number of points awarded, is at the sole discretion of the Apolyton administration. These decisions are non-negotiable. ACS staff are not eligible to participate.

Aw, come on. Civfanatics just made a thread where you posted and they pulled out some lucky winners. And you made all these rules and regulations...

Civfanatics is beer on the beach. Poly is wine with dinner.

Not interested? OK -- you've increased the odds of someone else winning a prize then.

My critique of the contest (don't take it personally, please):

            1. The rules are unnecessarily complex.

            2.
... who post a meaningful GalCivII comment ...

Obviously, there is a major problem there. You need an arbiter to decide what comments are meaningful. Objectivity problems arise, since "meaningful" is clearly a subjective thing. Basically it comes down to "who we say wins, wins".

              1. The rules are unnecessarily complex.
The rules were/are designed to reflect a major goal of the contest which I stated in my personal comment in the PR above: "to increase the exposure of GalCivII in the Apolyton community and beyond".

Given this though, I recognize that they are not the simplest. That said I tried -- perhaps more effectively in the related news item for instance -- to communicate them as clearly as possible. I think I did at least a fair job in doing so, but then again I'm biased.

              2. [..] You need an arbiter to decide what comments are meaningful. Objectivity problems arise, since "meaningful" is clearly a subjective thing. Basically it comes down to "who we say wins, wins".
As stated in the PR above, the arbiter of what post is meaningful is the Apolyton administration. Regardless of who that arbiter is/could be, yes, "meaningful" is a subjective matter; at the same time, I would like to add that this qualification is not going to be applied in a strict sense.

Further to this, the primary reason the word "meaningful" is in there is an effort to dissuade people from simply spamming the GalCivII forums with nonsense that have nothing to do with the game. That would not be a productive use of time, energy or resources for anyone taking the contest seriously ourselves included. I at least hope that we all want quality discussions in these forums, and that comes in great part from quality posts. With this in mind, the "meaningful" qualification came about. It's not intended to be nor do I believe it practically becomes a 'rule for rules' sake'.

Regardless of whether or not I have assured you in your or others in their mind with similar concerns, I do appreciate your raising them publicly in a constructive way in turn giving me the opportunity to respond to them.

In closing, there is another (or at least "a" ) plus to this contest that you might not have thought about yet: you could win a prize without even realizing a contest was going on.

The latest patch seems to be focused on making cosmetic improvements to the game, which is cool in itself. For the Modders that are more interested in being able to tweak various aspects of gameplay whats in store in future patches?

Re: the rules, think what would happen if a couple hundred of people took part in the contest. Even if you consider the rules simple, it would turn into an organizational nightmare with many man-hours having to go into scoring the posts

                  That's a cool effect, I admit

Anyway, good luck to all the contenders. Hopefully we see more contests for prizes too

If you were a staff member, I'd consider that a volunteering offer.

This contest can likely give you the oportunity to learn something, even if you choose not to ask any questions or make any comments yourself -- that is, just by following along.

But if you do ask questions/make comments in the interest of learning about the game, there's the possibility that you will learn something along the way... and maybe even win a prize between now and this time next week in the process.

Too many rules if i did anyway.
I thought we went over this already...

How can you have meaningful discussions if you don't have the game yet?

This competition seems naturally biased towards being won by someone who already has the game, or it's encouraging people who don't have it to pseudospam* the GalCiv 2 forums.

*post semi-intelligent seeming fluff, or just post hundreds of dumb questions.

It's too bad the winner doesn't get 3 free extra racial ability points every game. Oh boy I'd be drooling.
