  • GalCiv Writer available

If you are interested in modifying the data files for GalCiv, you might want to check out a program I'm working on.

Currently, it allows you to edit Events and UP Issues. I'm almost done with SB Modules, and then I'll do Techs.

In time I hope to have all of the editable text files incorporated within my program. No promises though.

    Here is the link.

Please let me know what you think of it in this thread. And of course, all suggestions are welcome.

I just got it and started fixing some things in events I'd already downloaded. It really does work great, I feel a bit better with some of the error detection it has.
    John Brown did nothing wrong.

When I first say the title of this thread, I though someone was offering to clean up some of the - let's call it "creative grammar" to be charitable.

Are you intending any further updates to it? Perhaps a technology editor or something?

This really is a fantastic program.

SB Modules are done and in testing now.

I am working on Techs as I type this. In order to do Techs right I've also got to parse out the .ship, .imp, and .invtactic files, so I can show what dependencies the currently displayed tech has.

This is going to slow down work a little bit, but I'd still expect to finish Techs some time this week. Probably more likely this weekend.

And, of course, already having the parsing routine written will come in handy when I add Ships, Improvements and Invasion Tactics.

                  Thanks for the compliment.

Would anyone else like to see a map editor? I checked the files a bit, saw a few interesting things, but it is mostly hex-based, so except for renaming stars or maybe planets, I can't do much with what's in there (it would require work I'd better spend on Clash). I'd really like to be able to draw maps, at least for stars, although putting a nice anomaly of a special kind in one spot would open wide avenues for scenarios.

I took a look at the hex files too. I'm weighing if I want to try to parse them out.

Stardock's mentioned that a map editor is a possibility, I'd hate to dump a lot of time into a project that gets superseded by an official tool.

Besides, I have to finish the Writer first, and then take a break and actually play the game for a bit.

I think that's a fabulous idea! But if you don't mind, I'm going to hold off until I get all the base files finished up.

I'd rather not have 4 or 5 versions posted all over the place.

you can always update a directory entry or re-upload a file (if you choose to also host the file on us)

                              thanks
