  • NWN 2

I've had Never Winter Nights 2 since it came out back in 2006 but I recently decided to pick up copies of the three expansion packs in the bargain bin and I have to say I'm pretty impressed by the amount of content Obsidian has made for this game. Has anyone else been dusting off their copy of this game?

The Zehir one had some cool overworld map features. It actually gave you some reason to invest in skills like spot and nature. But I've been spoiled by 4e and can't really get back into 3.5. I'm wondering when we're going to see a tactical RPG with 4e rules.

I honestly still don't know the 3.5e rules and consider all this class changing to be extremely un AD&D like. I played a little bit of 1st edition but mostly 2nd edition which felt exactly like 1st edition but with some streamlined rules. I can't imagine trying to learn 4th edition rules.

BTW I'm going to be doing the Mask of the Betrayer expansion pack first before moving on to Storm of Zehir... Any suggestions on a character build for those campaigns? In the old NWN 1 (which used AD&D 2nd edition rules which I knew and understood unlike the 3.5 rules) I'd usually play a Half-Elf F/M/T since I could only have one companion. How many companions can you have in MoB or SoZ and what build is best for those campaigns? I found an epic build called a Drow Fury (http://nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Drow_Fury...%29,Pal%282%29) but it seems pure munchkinry and I don't think he can cast spells. What's a Thief-Wizard build with decent fighting abilities?

            I'm pretty sure NWN 1 was 3rd edition D&D

[edit:] as for builds, MotB you can (should?) use your NWN2 vanilla character for. I played a Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker, if only to be able to mash up most enemies quickly. You get cleric and mage types to join you later anyway (and in MotB, your initial companion is a red mage, so two mage types can be kind of difficult at the beginning, if only because you have to mm spells a lot).

For SotZ you make a party of up to 4 (IIRC?) and can have one extra companion from a couple that are willing to join you. I didn't play much, since my HD crashed and I don't really have the time to play anymore, but I had begun with a dual-wielding dwarven ranger as my main PC.

The other tree guys in your party you can actually dismiss and create new ones, and swap them at will while on inns, so you can always replace a member if it is not performing like you hoped. I don't remember what happened with their levels if you did this though.

I decided to restart the whole game from the original campaign. I'm planning on making a rogue-wizard combo based on this:

I seemed to have screwed up my character in the main campaign. I was supposed to switch to arcane trickster at 10th level but I forgot to have seven points in my lore skill.

                  That's what tools are for.

I played through the OC, MOTB and SoZ recently. Still good fun after all these years. There are some decent fan modules on the vault, too. Harp and Chrysanthemum has always been a favorite of mine, joined recently by Misery Stone, which does an incredible job of capturing the Ravenloft atmosphere.

WoW isn't a turn based tactical RPG. 4e is a lot more like Shining Force or Final Fantasy Tactics.

Stuie, that character editor did the trick. Thanks.

I'm not good at planning character builds.

I'm making some pretty good progress on the OP and the only other time I played through it I went the evil path so this time I'm playing a good character so there is some new stuff like the city guard subplot line.

This got bad reviews and bad feedback from fans on release, so I never got around to playing it. Did the expansions fix the issues?

I think so. I bought it when it first came out and found there were several large issues with bugs but they've patched the heck out of it and that seems to have solved all the problems. With the expansions I am thoroughly enjoying the game plus the last expansion came out about a year ago so the game isn't that old yet.
