  • Call of Duty: Never again a GOTY nominee

What a gong show. As usual I'm just ahead of the curve when it comes to these things. Right Dr Spike?

I was whining about how they've become unoriginal and formulaic for quite some time...

Publisher Activision announced today new "strategic plans" for the Call of Duty franchise, announcing a new developer for the shooter franchise and confirming the departure of key Infinity Ward staffers.

Activision's New Plans For Call of Duty Include New Developer, New Genres

Publisher Activision announced today new "strategic plans" for the Call of Duty franchise, announcing a new developer for the shooter franchise and confirming the departure of key Infinity Ward staffers.

Activision announced it will form a "dedicated [Call of Duty] business unit that will bring together its various new brand initiatives with focused, dedicated resources around the world." It plans to expand the Call of Duty brand "with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit" placing a focus on "high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

As previously announced, Activision will release a new Call of Duty game from series co-developer Treyarch, responsible for Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World At War, this fall. Developer Infinity Ward is still scheduled to release two downloadable map packs for Modern Warfare 2 this year.

In 2011, Activision will release another new game in the Call of Duty series from an unspecified developer. It also announced plans for another Call of Duty-based title from developer Sledgehammer Games, the recently formed studio lead by Dead Space creative leads Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey. The Sledgehammer-helmed title will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre."

The previously mentioned Call of Duty business unit will be led by Philip Earl, who currently runs Activision Publishing's Asia Pacific region. Activision Publishing's Steve Pearce, chief technology officer, and Steve Ackrich, head of production, will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis. Former studios heads Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer with Infinity Ward, officially.

"Activision doesn't comment on HR matters related to its studios," said reps when asked for comment about the departures and allegations of insubordination. The two former Infinity Ward heads are said to have butted heads with their publisher creatively over the direction of the Call of Duty franchise.

Activision Publishing also announced that the company is "in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world."
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Modern Warfare 2 is probably the only videogame worth playing on the market, and has been since its release. You are free to jack it to knockoff fantasy storylines with piss dialogue and mages and golums and failed Starship trooper actors while I read books and play Modern Warfare

Wiglaf making more sense than Asher.

MW2 has a staggering playerbase, that only someone as pigheaded as Asher could ignore. I have 2 and a half days of MP played time (that's game time so add 10%-15%) and a good K/D, and I'm not even in the top 5 million in terms of total kills.

Total number of active online players is well into 8 figures. So whatever reason is behind this change, it ain't the lack of success of MW2, unoriginal or not.

So does Nickelback and Justin Bieber.

        Uh, what?

It's very commercially successful. The problem is it's derivative, unoriginal, and officially a commodity product. The co-founder of IW was just fired for fighting the direction of COD, just so you know.

And IW isn't making the CoD coming out in 2010 or 2011.

Activision completely killed Guitar Hero (which was also very possible) and is on its way to killing COD. That's not at all saying MW2 isn't insanely popular, just to be clear for the economists reading this thread. It's just saying they're milking the franchise to death.

FWIW, I've heard that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a much better game in MP than MW2.

The problem here is I'm on a whole 'nother level than you, Dr Spike. While you get off playing MW2 online with pimple-faced ***-bashing 13 year olds and going for your killstreak (WHO DA MAN!!!!), I ask for more out of gaming. You don't see a problem with a gaming company taking a formula and milking it for all its worth despite the objections of the creators of the franchise. Rushing out and releasing games based on financial calendars rather than merit. I don't expect you to understand why Activision is ****ing this up, but more intelligent gamers around the world are pretty pissed right now.

And yes, the fact that your (serious) opinion falls inline with Wiglaf's over-the-top joke opinion should tell you something.

And just to be clear. The problem is the quality of the games are going to suffer as the product is milked to death. Activision has made it very clear they have a "winning formula" on their conference call, which is to say that you should expect nothing in terms of gameplay changes.

That's why it'll no longer be a GOTY candidate.

It was this year despite your grumblings and will be next time as well (if Treyarch don't screw it up as they traditionally make weaker iterations).

I don't expect a casual gamer such as yourself, who doesn't have the skills for MP, to understand the subtle improvements in MW2 MP compared to MW MP (the SP was not as good, I'll grant). There's nothing wrong with refinements - and well over 10 million people (and the reviewers who gave an average of 94%) clearly agree with me rather than you.

              Weak, DrSpike.

Elitism & Console FPS = Fail.

It's not so much that I ran out of arguments, but my arguments are apparently so intellectual that they fly over the head of somebody who hangs out with pimply teenagers and uttering slurs as you frag ****.

I wish I could find that thread where you jizzed in your pants over Gears of War, which is played by more 12 year old boys than the recorder. And let's face Facts: Terri Shaivo could play torchlight, probably still.

Note: I never play Gears of War MP for the 12 year old boy problem.

Nor will DrSpike. Call of Duty rots your tiny, tiny brains.

The only downside to Modern Warfare 2 is that there is no points bonus for sniping opponents in the crotch. I have been wanting this pun on the headshot to be implemented for years now. I suppose this wait will continue but I hear DLC is coming so there is hope on this front. OH HELLO did you hear they ported torchlight to the Apple II? In fact it is free with every Apple II, right now. You just keep clicking the mouse and stare at the screen. It is the complete torchilight experience.
