So far my google foo hasn't been able to find out what is actually on this version, but i've decided not to install just yet - SecuRom cost me a couple of drives last yearish so i'm not prepared to take any chances again.
hopefuly this is just standard disk checking DRM....but we are talking EA! If i can find out what is on it i'll post here.
Have you managed to find anything yet concerning this?
I did send an email to mastertronic customer support about a week ago but have yet to recieve any reply about what DRM it uses.
I have chosen not to install it until i know for sure - but many people would think i'm being extreme about this! I've put the game on my pile of 'to play later sometime' games for now.
I have no idea about this, but i never heard of a harddisc getting fried by copy-protection - only DVD-drives being screwed somehow. But i really dont know...
I did some searching after my last post and sent an email to Mastertronics tech support.
See what happens.
Fortunately, I have another copy of Alpha Centauri, without the expansion, that I can still use. It's a few years old and just has to be in the cd drive for the game to work.
why not? it's not a SMAC strategy thread, on in depth look at the game - it was just a heads up for guys here to look out for this new combined re-release. If you want you can link to it in the smac forums or borrow the links etc, if the smac fans over there need to know.
Alternatively if some staff think it's in the wrong place they can move it
It was posted by Mart in the AC General forum a month prior to this thread.
Fortunately, I was lurking there.

Marathon, the reason my friends and I have been playing the same hotseat game since 2006...
Actually, now that I have SMAC, I don't think I will be touching XCOM again for quite some time. Possibly forever. XCOM had too many interface problems for me to really enjoy it. The fact that I spent hours playing it is probably more due to the fact that the game's tactical bits crawl along at a snail's pace.
Put your hands slowly behind your head and march quickly to bed. Put your pjs on, sleep, work, and do not return to the game until your exams are finished!
Also remember to eat - maybe by finishing whatever that is in your mouth in your photo.
Good luck with your exams my friend - there will be aeons for playing AC afterwards.
Although having said that, when I had exams some years ago I started playing Baldur's Gate (1) again, because I had done so when I was sitting the exams before and passed them all. How did you do with your last AC marathon/exams session?
Today I spent the entire day playing SMAC. I have given the CD to my roommate and he has locked it up. I will not get it back until after the exams, which are in a week's time, and for which I have not done any revision so far.
That's not the worst of it.
The worst of it is my brother mailed me a package and it arrived today.
I now have a new Dell gaming-level computer.
This is very sweet of him but gentlemen, I am well and truly ****ed.
Stay away from home for a week. Generally I Can only get low level of work done at home, maybe 20% productivity tops.
Go somewhere where you don't have the opportunity, only be at home to sleep. Yeah, it is a bit more expensive to eat, but it is worth it in productivity.
