    Concerning Sirlin:

His article "Play to Win" was a really obnoxious piece of writing that seemed to suggest if you're not squeezing every competitive advantage out of your game, you ain't worth sh!t. Every tactic is fair game, every trick is encouraged. This only works if the game is well balanced, which he claims SSF2T is.

The fact that he had to rebalance it in the first place blows that out of the water. He also skirts uncomfortably around the issue of Akuma. "Well, hang on, Akuma... well... that there would be what we in the biz call 'an exception'. Everybody's still balanced perfectly and if you're having difficulties, it's your fault. Honest!"

His thoughts might well be more applicable if you're talking about playing in the arcades, where time costs money and people are waiting to take their turn at the game. But a whole generation of us also started on Genesis, SNES, and home consoles, and we play to enjoy - and winning is irrelevant.

He also ballsed up the rebalancing of SSF2THDR, wherein a basic bug led to the autoblock bug vs. crossups (now corrected in the latest patch). The characters still aren't balanced - Honda will still eat any non-ballers for breakfast, and Boxer's super is still fricking ridiculous, just to name a few. He shuffled stuff around and that's not the same as mission accomplished. It would have been easier to bear if he hadn't been so self righteous about it.

The only unilaterally good things about the rebalancing were: removal of the random input frame windows for Dragon Punch moves (which actually has been the case for all games after Super Turbo anyway) and the simplification of the command inputs.

He's been fired from Backbone for promising shedloads of stuff to Capcom and then not delivering. He also went beyond the specs for his position and started arsing around with code - which, regardless of his good intentions (which he failed to deliver, see above), is still unprofessional and which makes him pretty much the only person to be surprised when Capcom refused to let him make his own game with their intellectual property.

So in short, a few years back he wrote a controversial cod philosophy article badmouthing people who aren't like him - but since then he's really done not much else worthy of attention. He loves games and claims to being a defender of gamers' interests. But he's got attitude problems with everybody he personally doesn't like, he talked a good line and then failed to deliver, and basically poisoned the wells for gamer involvement in the dev process with Capcom games from here on in.

He may be a good gamer. He may have the interests of gamers genuinely at heart. He may have tilted at Capcom's windmills in futzing about with game code for our benefit. But I have yet to see anything to suggest that he's not a self-aggrandizing ass.

And now I'm going to play SF4 in the privacy of my own house and not care if I win or not.

Add me (DaHorde) if you want to play some SF4 (360 version, I can't remember what you have).

i got to play cammy finally. And I wasn't doing as well as I thoguht I would. The nerfs are affecting me more so than the nice buffs she got. Lot of crutches she had that I could abuse are no longer spammable. I'll have to adopt to the new ways....

If I could have 1 thing I'd make Cannon strike an overhead, just like in mvc2. But that alone would make her a god tier.... especially with the TK canon strike version~

Most Cammy's I play online just spam the low special and aren't that hard to beat. But I've seen a couple of really good Cammy players who mix it up and I find her quite frustrating. Like with many of the less popular characters I just don't play her enough to know how to react.

Yeah... if you don't know her enough, shes gonna give you some hard times but her mixup and crossup aren't real. Once the gimmicks are out, its an uphill battle.

and most of the time FA is gonna counter about all the option she has. Playing the same ol' cammy in this new enviornment would be annoying.... with the nerfs it's been rough.

That and going back to ST style has been rough as well... (though SF4 isnt as unforgiving as I remember ST to be)
                  :-p

Sorry to resurrect a sleeping thread, but I am about to get SF4 for the PC to play against my brother. (The friend who owned the XBox 360 copy moved away.)

So I'm looking into getting a gaming stick. I don't have any other games for PC that use the gaming stick, so I'm not sure what I should get. It's not going to get much use (comparatively) because it'll just be for SF4, but I don't want a piece of crap that won't even let me play the game properly. Cost is an issue. I don't see myself shelling out triple figures for the stick either, given that it's for one single game which costs $40.

What have you tried in the way of PC arcade sticks? Do you know if the XBox arcade sticks will work in a PC USB slot?

The very cheapest sticks aren't worth having. The entry level stick is the Hori EX2, and if you are in the US Hori do a better Arcade Pro stick. The new Madcatz sticks are better (the SE slightly better than the Arcade Pro, and the Tournament Edition is the daddy - but pricey). The TE definitely works on the PC - I'd expect the SE too but worth a google. You'll need to find drivers.

Okay. The Hori EX2 looks like it's an XBox-only stick though. Does it also have USB?

I did see a bundle of SF4/MadCatz arcade stick for PC on ebay for around $70 USD. I'm not sure exactly what the stick's specs were though so I didn't buy it. Maybe if it crops up again on ebay I'll get a better look. But if it's only adding $30 to the retail value of the combined package, it's probably one of those cheapo sticks you mentioned that'll wear out with just a few weeks of use.

All 360 sticks are USB. They generally work on the PC with the right drivers (and the Hori one definitely does).

they both work. 360 ones are easier. ps3 requires lil more trickier driver installing.

quality stick is like any other sporting equipment. it's luxury and only necessary as your game steps up. even then you can still choose to use cheap equipments if you choose... it's not gonna affect you all that much as long as you're not top 8 ranked player.

I still use a SC2/T5 anniversary sticks and it's been serving me fine. (and apparently from some tourney footage a few top players are doing the same thing as i am.. unmodded and all)

the question is, do you really need a stick at all? i would just deal with a pad if its gonna be for 1 game on pc...

Yeah, I do need a stick. I've tried playing with the SNES-style gamepads and they hurt my hands something awful.

Plus I'm only really going to be playing this against my brother, and he's pretty good. Not exactly competition level, but in CvS2 he mastered Paint the Fence with Dictator and roll-cancel Electricity with Blanka, which is pretty much game over for anybody else.

                                So yeah.

I ended up getting an "upper low tier" stick (i.e. a Dhalsim stick?) so that'll be arriving with the game itself from ebay.

I tried to get the game off Steam, but Steam ballsed up and I'm pissed at it. I made my userpass about four months ago, and have forgotten my password. The password retrieval system is fuctup and in order to lodge a complaint I have to register for a completely separate userpass combo for customer support.

Steam can go smoke a wholegrain turd as far as I'm concerned. Sock cookers.

So I should be on SF4 before long.
