Well how long ago was Fallout released? 1997 - so thats over 10 years ago and well I still really want to get through the game without getting Dogmeat killed(we just like bonded ok). In fact I have not started Fallout 2 because of this.

So I still enjoy and think about(fondly) a game over ten years old, Do I still think about Oblivion, Halo, Gears of War, etc? ummm no. They are over in terms of what I can get out of them.

So don't just knock a game because for you it may be all about eye candy, some people prefer the game to how it may look

Just to give the opposing view on this issue. Anyway you must be as happy as a pig in sh*t as pretty much all games released today are all about the eye candy - so good for you

I'm posting this from work. Currently, on my work computer, I have Fallout and X-Com installed. X-Com came out in 1994. I still occasionally play both games. Yes, the graphics suck by current standards. Hell, the graphics suck by the standards of 2001! But they are both still fun to play.

QFT. The same people understate the gameplay improvements made in recent games simply because they look better also.

But for a lot of old games there just haven't been any new games with better gameplay. Fallout is one of those games. Fallout is far from perfect, but there are not many RPGs out there with the same setting (and the few that exists are not that great). Unfortunately no other game even comes close to the gameplay of Fallout (at least not as far as I know... if you know a newer game like Fallout (with the same or better gameplay), please feel free to share). So the "other stuff has come along since" line seems like a lie to me, when talking about Fallout
I didn't play Fallout when it was released. IIRC the first time I played Fallout was like 4 years ago (and even then it was a old game)
This space is empty... or is it?

Fallout is a good game. Note the present tense.

Give the original Fallout modern graphics and I'd still be playing it. The story and gameplay are top notch and, IMO, nothing has come along better. As Adagio pointed out, that even with Fallout's popularity, there have been barely any RPG's held in a post-apocalyptic world and none have the SPECIAL system or the humor inherent in the story (especially the "Perks" pictures).

The funny thing is that Fallout was supposed to be in the GURPS system. But licensing issues forced them to build their own system, the SPECIAL system, with help from David Zeb Cook, former D&D designer for 2nd edition.

Later on, D&D borrowed the perks and skills for its 3rd edition skills and feats.

And now my friend HMB sends me a link to a Fallout conversion for the GURPS system

Yes this can happen, and I make that mistake sometimes

For me the biggest overall improvements(in modern PC gaming) have come in the area of game UI's(huge improvement imho), and not needing to mess around with this kind of stuff:

"This game does not work if you have too much memory (allocating memory
does not help). It works with MS-DOS5 HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE (they can
only use 16 MB RAM - included as *.OLD). The beginning of your CONFIG.SYS
                  should have something like this:

                  DEVICE=C:\BIN\HIMEM.OLD
                  DEVICE=C:\BIN\EMM386.OLD 8192 RAM"

BUT in terms of games that feature in my all time top ten, most(like 70%) are games older than 10 years old, all of which I still play today over more modern fare, as many are so darn huge, unending, challenging and interesting!

Can you help me keep Dogmeat alive? I just can't stand it when he gets it!
I'm near the end in that final(I think) underground bunker and have a room of well armed super mutants that just seem to spell certain death for Dogmeat - I wish I could tell him to sit...but as he's such a loyal dog he gets stuck in to help me out....it's so tragic!

GURPS is one of the best RPG systems, for CRPG's Fallout is special (groan!), and I liked the system in Daggerfall for char generation.

I'm slightly concerned that in the new Fallout, well it's going to be very stripped down, a bit like what happened in Oblivion, so less an rpg system and more an action/adventure system(people get upset when I call Oblivion an FPS ).

IIRC, you can snipe all incoming enemies so that they die before they can hit Dogmeat. Dogmeat then runs through every electric field you go through, taking damage, but if you have enough Stimpaks it should be easy to keep him alive.

I managed it on my second try but I think it required a few save and loads.

I'm going to play Fallout 1 then 2 for the first time. I'm very excited after reading how much people love this game.

And nicely timed since by the time I finish, Fallout 3 will be released.

Keep in mind I started Fallout about 2 years ago(roughly), it's true I've only put about a month into it of solid play, but it's one of those games with quite a lot to see, do and carry around. I'll be interested to hear how you go.....I think there is a old Fallout thread around somewhere?

@ Alinestra Covelia, ok thanks for the tip, I'll give it a go...although I think I tried pretty much everything but i might just get lucky? and those mutants(4 or 5?) are armed with huge damage stuff, like rockets and plasma's iirc.
Stimpacks might also be in short supply. I'm all tanked up in that battle armour and if my team would just let me get on with it I'm sure it would be fine..........poor Dogmeat.

Either way Dogmeat makes a reappearance in a Fallout 2 easter egg.

I was reading a Fallout 3 forum lastnight, and one of the threads was about your favourite moment in Fallout 1 and 2.

The biggest response seemed to be The Glow, which sounds very intriguing, looking forward to that part.

Ah yes the Glow was cool, and dangerous.....take plenty of rad pills with you!

So Dogmeat gets reanimated in 2? that's a small miracle! he died 3 times last night, each time all that was left was a bl**dy splat mark and a few bits of hide!!
Maybe I just have to let him go......so I can at least start part 2 in the series. I'll try a few more times........it's not only Alinestra who has been able to keep him alive, so I know it IS possible

Out of interest what did you use 'to snipe' those mutants(if you can recall)? I'm currently armed with a plasma, but maybe there is a better choice......I don't seem to hit often enough and do enough damage to take them down quickly enough?

Yes, and does the fact you admit it mean your reasonable persona is coming back?
