  • Do NOT buy Age of Conan

As a consumer, I feel obligated to help others avoid fraud. If I buy something from a store or services from a business and they perform an act of fraud, I sure as heck warn my friends, family and community to make sure no one else is defrauded.

Age of Conan is a terrible game, it is not finished. The beginning is very polished. After the very start, there is simply no game.

I have a very good machine, I run the game at it's highest setting with few technical glitches, so that is not an issue for me.

I am making this thread to stop other people from being cheated.

    The good about AoC:

    1. The beginning of the game, the island of Tortage is well polished. Quests are abundant and fun, they are well designed, mostly bug free. They have high quality voice acting for each and every NPC.
    2. The graphics are nice, though I have never cared about graphics much in games, gameplay is always far more important for me.

That is the full list of what is good.

    The bad about AoC:

    1. After Tortage, the quality and quantity of quests takes a nosedive. The second you leave the new player island, the voice acting stops. The number of quests takes a nose dive. The fun factor of the quests takes a nose dive. There are bugged quests. As you level up quests effectively disappear, gradually becoming rarer and rarer till they disappear. Player vs player fighting is shallow, empty and pointless. I enjoy PVP and have enjoyed games where it is a key feature. I play on a RP-PVP server. The PVP is simply not fun, there is no purpose to it at all and it is impossible to fight people who are more then 5 or 6 levels higher then you and win. If someone 6 levels higher attacks you(except for certain class combos) you WILL die. Random jerks attacking others on the RP-PVP servers is not constant, but enough to be irritating. There is nothing to actually DO in the game. There is no content. It is like buying a box of ice cream and finding it is empty, there is simply nothing in there. The developers cannot possibly add enough content to satisfy gamers. Every time a game so shallow comes out, the developers promise they will add content, which usually translate to one more race, or one dungeon, or one new area or what have you. The game is so empty of content that the developers cannot ever add enough to bring the game to where it should be, without another year and a half of development and selling a new game.

    2. Attributes(strength, dexterity, intelligence, what have you) do not work. This is a key, core feature of the game which simply does not work.

    3. A majority of feats in the game are broken, insofar as they do not have ANY effect, or do not work properly. This would be the GW equivalent of skills not doing ANYTHING, or their descriptions being entirely incorrect. When I say entirely incorrect I mean, entirely incorrect. If a description says it does +100 X damage or what have you, it may well do 5 damage or 50 or none at all, there is no way to tell. This is not an exaggeration, a majority of "feats"(skills) for every class simply do not work at all, or are drastically mislabeled.

    4. There is no inventory system or items in the game. At least there is effectively no inventory system. The difference between each item in the game is minimal. All the equipment mostly looks the same for each class. The difference in the function and power of items is negligible or non exist ant. You may find an interesting piece of loot every few hundred monsters you kill which increases your combat abilities by a negligible amount, truly negligible, 1% etc. Quests give rewards, however quests dry up as you level and even the best quest loot is negligible.

    5. Crafting is utterly broken, many, many crafting skills do not work properly. The necessary items do not drop from any monster or spawn, or the skills simply do not work. One of the skills, gem crafting, actually CRASHES your machine! The developers actually posted in the last patch notes that they fixed it.... then posted an update later saying that it does not.

Tortage is fun and will last you 1 day if you rush through it, or 3 days if you take it slow. Then the game effectively ends, it is quite clear the developers wanted to make a very strong early area to well, sucker people in and then they stopped developing the rest of the game. The reviews which rate this game highly have never left Tortage, the starting island. I looked at the reviews online and at fan sites before I bought the game and should have listened to the critics, I did not.

I am trying to save you money. Do not be deceived or swindled, this game is utterly unfinished, unfinished to the degree that no amount of patching will fix it, is it effectively missing a game.

The amount of rabid-fanboy reviews circulating is absolutley staggering, worse for this game then any recent game.

Go spend the $50 on a movie and some movie food, you'll buy more happiness with it that way. Releasing a bad game is one thing, in the gaming world today you have expect unfinished or undeveloped games. This is not a case of Funcom simply making an unfinished game. This is a case of Funcom activley defrauding the public. They could not have possibly put more effort into Tortage, the starting area which will hold most casual gamers over for 4-5 days, maybe even 6. After that initial area, the quality of the game takes a nose dive and gets much worse, rapidly. They try to sell you a car which will get you home and then collapses in your driveway.

    DO NOT buy this game.

It's an MMO, the first year will be terrible.

People say that about every MMO when it comes out and it is NOT true.

Many MMOs were fun and fine out of the box.

Asherons Call. Ultima Online. City of Heroes. WoW.

Come on Vesayan, the game is not as bad as you're making it out to be.

My only gripes are that it is too easy to level up, and a few other little things.

So what if there is no voice acting for every NPC you talk to? It's not like all other MMO's have voice acting for every NPC, we're lucky we have it at all, and the dev's said they will be adding voice acting in later patches. I'm cool with it.

And when you say the dev's are not adding any content, i'm curious what content you actually want?

This game has the potential to be the best of the best MMO's, it's just going to take a lot of beta-testing from us players and patching. While it's not a good thing, I'm okay with it, the game is certainly enjoyable to me.

Beta-testing during release is a really bad sign. Destroys a game's reputation.

Depends on how you look at it. Yes, for single player games I would agree, 'beta-testing' a game after release is quite bad.

But for MMO's, it's a different story; you have to cater to the many different needs of each player, you have to find a balance that makes everyone happy at the same time. There is no real way to do that unless you throw it to the world and let them complain about what needs to be fixed. After a year or so, it finally settles down to a reasonably good point.

So you have to ask yourself, am I the kind of person that is willing to put up with a few bugs and unbalanced gameplay, or shall I wait a year until the dust settles?

As for me, I enjoy being part of the play balancing, I enjoy exploring what is good and what needs to be fixed.

Actually, it's worse for MMOs. I wouldn't pay a subscription fee to beta test a game. I'd be pissed. At least with a single player, I could shelf it and wait for the patches. For an MMO, it's just wasted money.

Ok, that is your opinion Dashi, but there is AT LEAST 300,000 people who are enjoying the game, and don't mind spending the money to be a part of this creation.

In the end, the game becomes a collective development of the developers and the gamers themselves.

Look at WoW; Blizzard did 75% of it, 25% of it is by the gamers themselves, contributing ideas, fixes, etc. Being a part of the solution is a big deal to many gamers.

MMO's are evolving games, adapting games that takes years to mature. If you expect the dev's to come out with a perfected MMO, you are really asking for too much. It's not easy to please half a million people.

The voice acting is not important. The point is ALL polish magically dissapears after Tortage.

What content do I want? Lots of varied interesting quests.

I pulled it from my arse (which has proven to be a reliable source). Last I heard, there were 500,000 people playing AoC, I assume 200,000 hate the game, and 300,000 enjoy it, I get this assumption based on the number of people who have said good things about it against the number that have said bad things about it on the official boards.

I find the quests more interesting than WoW's.

And you have brought up a problem that the Dev's hurt themselves with - a lot of the quality drops after you leave Tortage. But come on, if you take the voice-acting out of Tortage, is the game really that much different from the rest of the game? I don't think so, the voice-acting in Tortage has simply risen the expectation levels too high.

I bet once voice-acting is activated for all quests throughout, the game won't seem so bad to you.
