Bing (the guy who used to be a die hard DnD and Ravenloft fan) showed me the "GURPS Lite" pdf.
I have to say, I'm pretty impressed. He is working on a conversion for Ravenloft to GURPS and he may use the 3e Horror, Undead, and Ritual magic rules.
I like GURPS. It was designed for flexible play and verisimilitude, which you can then adjust how you like. Apparently there are no more arbitrary character classes. Everything is points buy, even character improvement.
One thing I didn't like about the UK Steve Jackson's "Dungeoneer" engine was that the major bad guys (like that wizard mastermind Xortan Throg and the priest Sargon) were impossible to replicate using the rules. DnD had a lesser problem (you could replicate them but the rules took some massaging). GURPS seems to side step that by making everything modular.
