So I got a Wii. What Wii games should I get?

    Have already:
    Zelda (Twilight)
    MLB 2K9
    Simpsons
Prince of Persia something or another (GF's game)
    Wii Sports
    Wii Play
Link's Crossbow Trainer (okay, this one probably doesn't count )

I generally play RPGs on the PC (Morrowind, or KOTOR, ie), sports games, and Civ.

    What I definitely want:
    * A Shooter. Must have 2-person co-op mode. My GF and I like playing those arcade shooters you find in movie theaters (Area 51, f.e.), and want one to play together. Less realistic is probably better, but we don't care that much about that aspect, but she hates historical games so preferably not a WWII re-enactment. Just quick fast paced shooting.

    * A 2-person Co-op RPG or Action/Adventure that has some RPG similarities. We may get Lego SW for Wii, if that's actually any good (have it for PC). Can you play Metroid 2 player? Also saw good reviews on No More Heroes, same question there.

    Maybe:
    * Mario Kart (the one coming out later this month). Anyone have good hopes for this?

    * SSBB. We do like fighting games, but is this really cartoony or does it have the feel of more normal fighting games?

    * Sports games - whatever. Is there a point in sports games on the Wii? Will I be dissappointed with the graphics, I wonder... used to playing on the PC. PS2 version of MLB 2k7 was acceptable, and Wii is same as PS2 IIRC, so hopefully okay. We'll see about Madden later.

Hidden gems? Does Wii have playable demos on Wii Connect? I can't get it to connect to my router, but I think that's my fault (forgetting the passkey for the new one). I will hopefully eventually get that working.

    Light gun games:
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles-My wife and I love playing this one co-op. just a blast. highly recommended.
Ghost Squad-pretty cheap, been meaning to pick it up
House of the Dead 2/3: see above

No more heroes is SP, very fun but graphics are a little jerky at times. Lots of blood.

SSBB-cartoony, lots of characters and stuff to unlock-2 player co-op through an adventure mode that takes about 10hrs or so. Another highly recommended.

Mario Kart-looks more like MK DS rather than MkD which is a very good thing. Can't wait to pick it up.

Metroid is 1 player, but very very slick. Really highlights the wiimote as a pointer for 1st person games.

As far as sports goes: I have SSX Blur and really like it, feels great to carve with the chuk, but it is pretty difficult to pull off uber moves. fun though, probably very cheap now.

I also have Mario Strikers which I haven't played much of-its not that great. I've heard that PES 2008 is fantastic, though, using the wiimote control

You don;t have Mario Galaxy? Fantastic game-can be played co-op with one person shooting/collecting star pieces.

RE4 is fantastic with the wiimote
Super Paper Mario is alright, parts are incredible, but other parts are just incredibly painful. witty game though.
Okami comes out soon-will def get, didn't play it on the ps2

No demos, but you can play some on ssbb, probably games you've already played though (virtual console games)

Virtual console is awesome, tons of old games to download for 5-10$.

Wiiware launched in japan a week or so ago, hopefully tothe us by summertime, with quite a few interesting games.

Before I gave away my Wii, I played:

Twilight Princess - very fun game.
Metroid Prime 3 - also a great game.
      Wii Sports, of course.

Mario Galaxy was definitely a game I had planned to buy (or rent).

Other than that, can't say I found many other games too compelling.

My brother already has a Wii and I want one. I've made a pact with myself that if I get any type of "A" grade in this semester's courses, I'll buy myself a console. (Subject to Wii availability of course.)

Metroid 3 is excellent, and Super Mario Galaxy is well worth getting. Apart from that, my brother liked Smash Bros. although I found it suffered from the same sort of incoherence that its predecessors did (many people like that about it so I don't pretend to be right on this).

He got Wii Play but that was after I left so I never tried it out.

Personally I can go for hours just playing around with the Miis. So cute!

Oh, interesting news article about the Wii shortage and possible explanation. It's here.

Wii shortage may finally be near an end

03:03 PM CDT on Saturday, March 29, 2008

By VICTOR GODINEZ / Staff writer vgodinez@dallasnews.com

OK, one last stab at explaining the Wii shortage.

I was talking to a game-industry analyst this week about how retailer GameStop (which is based in Grapevine) will fare if there is a recession or economic slowdown.

During the course of the interview, the analyst, Michael Pachter at Wedbush Morgan, said the real culprit for the Wii shortage in the U.S. is the weak dollar.

I know this is getting rather dense for a game column, but bear with me.

With a weak dollar, foreign companies that sell their goods in the U.S. for dollars and then convert those dollars to their native currencies get a smaller profit than if they sell their products in countries with strong currencies of their own (such as Europe with the euro). In other words, Nintendo makes a bigger profit on Wiis sold in Europe than on Wiis sold in the U.S.

So Nintendo, Mr. Pachter said, has been behaving perfectly rationally by sending excess Wii consoles to Europe to satisfy the more profitable consumers there.

But now that demand in Europe is subsiding to normal levels, those surplus consoles will be redirected to American gamers, Mr. Pachter said, and the Wii should finally become more plentiful in the States later this year.

That jibes with the time frame GameStop laid out for when it expects the Wii to become easier to find in the U.S.

Mr. Pachter's assessment makes a lot of sense to me, and it explains why Nintendo has been so reluctant to account for the Wii shortage. No one wants to hear that they're second-class customers, but that's exactly what we American gamers are right now.

Of course, all things being equal, Nintendo would probably have preferred to be able to supply both Europe and the U.S. simultaneously. But the company might be betting that the dollar will be stronger by the time European demand for the Wii subsides, and that may well happen.

Regardless, if you can't find a Wii this weekend at Wal-Mart, you can blame the French (and Germans, Italians and all the rest).

              Women and the Wii

Speaking of Nintendo's console, retailer Best Buy is hosting a series of getting-to-know-Wii events for moms at stores around the country this Sunday, including at the Best Buy at 3333 Preston Road in Frisco, north of Highway 121, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The idea is to get women comfortable playing on the Wii with their children as a new way to spend quality time with the tots.

Well, really, the idea is to get moms to buy their kids a Wii (if they can find one), but that probably sounded a bit too crass for a press release.

From Best Buy: "The in-store demonstrations, set in a female-friendly space where they can relax and play, will discuss important gaming trends as well as give attendees the opportunity to learn about the future of family gaming. In addition, there will be an hourly drawing for great prizes."

It's more profitable in Europe, period -- consoles always cost more there. It's an uneducated consumerbase that doesn't know any better.

N continuously shifts their supplies across the three regions to take advantage of the exchange rate and for game launches, you just don't see that because we don't get numbers from Europe.

I think I saw that N is upping production to 2.4m/month in the near term, though they are also launching in korea soon.

I suspect that april and may will have similar unit sales to march (720k), less of course due to the 4wk periods vs march's 5.

Wii fit is going to sell a ****load of consoles.

FWIW, in the Netherlands there are pretty much no Wii consoles available in stores at the moment. A co-worker actually called several stores yesterday to see if any had them in stock, none had....so i'm not sure what surplus that article is talking about. Of course it could be different in countries like the UK, France or Germany, which tend to get priority before the Dutch market..

That's funny - when this issue has come up before you've never made this point. In fact I seem to recall you blaming earlier shortages predominantly on a marketing move by Nintendo, deliberately keeping stocks low so that they could say the Wii is flying from the shelves.

The only thing that's funny here is your lack of reading comprehension.

I think this analyst is a monumental ****** and I do not agree with him, but it is undeniably fact that the companies price hardware & games higher in Europe, which means it is more profitable. The comments about Europe being more popular in no way make a statement saying Nintendo is shipping more consoles to Europe, nor does it make any statement as to whether I agree or not with a guy who I've repeatedly dismissed as a tool.
