What i prefer is "grand-strategy", that is, when you rule an empire, and your goal is to increase your influence, advance your civilization etc. Obviously, games like Europa Universalis and Civilization have done this in a very good way, however, even good game-concepts may get tired, and that is excacly what i feel is happening with both these great series. After all, playing Civ4 (and probably even so Civ: Rev) is not that different from playing Civ2, and playing EU3 feels very much the same as playing EU2.

But thanks for the suggestions here, Sins of a Solar empire and Lost Empires will certainly be checked out, and i hope that some of you also know of anything more.

How i miss the days when games like Imperialism would bring a fresh take on the strategy gaming!
I appreciate that the Sims series is not a grand strategy or 4x game. Spore in its later stages WILL be one however. Undoubtedly many folks will dislike it - I would remind everyone though that many folks disliked the Imperialisms - as indeed lots of folks (including some here) dislike the Paradox series. Oh and of course there were two Imperialisms, that was also a series.

Masquerading as games? Now far be it from me to put you in the same category as some of our fellow posters who insist the 360 is the home of TRUE "gamers" cause of Halo, etc. Im getting a little tired of folks defining "games" for me. When I grew up a game involved boards and turns and strategy. Folks played toy guns, and fired at targets at fairs and arcades, but no one really called those "games" (or rarely, at any rate) and certainly didnt call that "gaming". Now Im willing to accept that what is basically shooting can be designated as a game cause someone wraps goals and a story around it - I think it makes just as much sense to call a dollhouse/inaccurate life sim a game. And certainly, from all I can see Spore is more of a game than either.

btw two strategy games that have come out recently based on new IP are Lost Empire (?) published (but not developed) by Paradox, and Imperium Romanum. I dont know much about either, the former seems to be another space based TBS, and the latter a citybuilder. I dont know how much new ground either is breaking, though Imperium with historical events seems different from the Caesar3 I remember, but I havent played the more recent Roman city builders.

Lost Empires is in the tradition of Paradox games. Currently (from what I can tell on the forums), it is about 2-3 patches away from playable). There are also conflicting reports that the ai is braindead (to which the designer replies, "Well that is why we included multiplayer, duh.")
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

ground breaking often does not mean polished, and not only for Paradox, I think. The OP, faced with some quite polished games in established series, seemed to be asking for new IP only.

                Yep, definitely in Paradox tradition.
