  • New strategy games

In my days of playing, i've been playing a lot of different strategy games, like Civilization, Europe Universalis, and various RTS, but i feel the genre is getting less and less interesting as all the new games coming out are more or less clones of earlier releases like EU: ROME, Starcraft II, Civ:Rev etc. Does anybody know of any upcoming strategy games that actually is innovative in terms of play? Or maybe there even is titles i dont know about. Let me know!

You could check out Sins of a Solar empire - I've not played it but it is meant to be an RTS with a MOO TBS feel.

Or the Relic RTS games (like Company of Heroes) are a different take on the RTS genre.

Anyone tried Lost Empires - Immortals? I just grabbed the demo and have not tried it yet. It is 599MB.

Spore is likely to be something different, though not to everyone's taste.

Empires:Total War from CA, and The Sims3 from Maxis are going to be sequels in existing series, like the examples in the OP.

Pretty loose definition of strategy games.

Spore is gonna have an RTS piece, a civ-like piece, and a Moo-like piece. Even if theyre too "light" for our tastes, theyre still gonna make it a strategy game.

As for Sim3, the word on the street apparently is that its going to be more "gamelike" than the previous iterations.

heres some stuff emphasizing "social realism" and improved AI. Not sure how this relates specifically to goal, I think that buzz is based on other stuff

No need to pollute the thread.

Spore and Sims are of course, in a way, games about strategy, but it is not the kind of strategy i were thinking about when i started this topic. What i prefer is "grand-strategy", that is, when you rule an empire, and your goal is to increase your influence, advance your civilization etc. Obviously, games like Europa Universalis and Civilization have done this in a very good way, however, even good game-concepts may get tired, and that is excacly what i feel is happening with both these great series. After all, playing Civ4 (and probably even so Civ: Rev) is not that different from playing Civ2, and playing EU3 feels very much the same as playing EU2.

But thanks for the suggestions here, Sins of a Solar empire and Lost Empires will certainly be checked out, and i hope that some of you also know of anything more.

How i miss the days when games like Imperialism would bring a fresh take on the strategy gaming!

That's a very fair and polite way to put it. In contrast my strategy is to avoid steaming piles of turd masquerading as games.
