  • The Crysis Editor Sandbox2

Surely I am not the only one here that thinks this editor is probably one of the best things to come out in many years?

The editor is so powerful, you can literally create any game you like... WITH GREAT EASE!

Take a look at what people are doing with the editor: http://crymod.com/moddbmods.php

    Star Trek, set in space
    Jurassic Park
    Predator
    command & conquer
I even saw a point-and-click adventure type game.

I'm pretty sure even a TBS such as Civilization could be accomplished with this editor, I can imagine how well the graphics would enhance the game in terms of appearence.

Is this the first time you've ever used a game editor

I've looked at it but I'm not overly impressed nor am I excited about it. Until the game engine is properly coded, there's no point to it. I refuse to support crytek until they can figure out how to optimize code.

civilization on cryengine 2 is perhaps the stupidest idea I've heard this year. To say it would enhance the game in any way is to be too stupid to comprehend the purpose and the gameplay and the pure joy of Civ.

As for your comment on it can create 'any game I like', clearly you are referring to this from the point of view of an artist...

Does it let you code c++...or x86
What if I wanted to make an mmorpg

To me it looks like any other powerful design tool for an existing game engine. To say you can design any game you like with it would display you don't comprehend how games are made.

        wth?

You do know who I am right? I've been editing games since the days of windows 3.11 notepad, opening the stupid rules of CivII.

Crytek have done an amazing job with the engine. With its open spaces crytek have also done an excellent job with the AI, unlike games such as CoD4 which keep you fenced in, how hard is it to build an AI when you keep control of what the player does?

You are wrong on this one Asher, the game is good, the engine is better, the editor is brilliant. I have yet to come across an editor as powerful as this one, it is no wonder so many people are clammering to build their game just the way they want it.

The point of my post was to preach the easibility of the editor and the power (what can be customised), the good graphics, physics, etc are all just added bonuses.

If I can code c++ into it, it would no longer be easy. A low scale MMORPG might be possible though - which goes to show you how powerful the editor is.

How so? Does the editor let you store all chats on a server so you can keep them for a few months as the law asks you to in certain places? Or is it already part of the game?
Does it save persistant data on a server and allows logging in and out without loss?
If I can code c++ into it, it would no longer be easy
There are some things you cannot do without coding them. That' may be why Asher ranted at the"any game you want" part. For instance, does the game engine allow having teams on two unrelated maps and let you see both at once?
But it allows some lua scripting if I read well.

That's a really bad way to make your case to a programmer...

Because you've never used Visual Studio, probably.

Have you ever used a programming environment? Like, any? Notepad.exe + gcc is more powerful than this.

Game engines and their design tools are indispensable tools for artists and designers, but not for programmers. While I'm sure you can do a great many neat things with a scripted game editor, any programmer will scowl at it. I'm sure it's great for level editing (just as I'm sure it's nowhere near as good as the Unreal Engine 3.0 tools, but they're far from "free"). But I'm also sure you've got to be a special kind of stupid if you do anything but a FPS in Sandbox2.

And I'm curious, if you're so knowledgeable about this, what features does Sandbox2 provide that, say, the Source SDK lacks?

How the hell would that be possible if you can't do any low-level code?

As for your earlier question, yes, I know exactly who you are, which is why I'm certain that you're clueless.

This is yet another scripted game editor. It has its useless, namely as a game editor, but when you start preaching it as a tool for developing MMORPG and 2D games you show how little you understand about game development. Even if it's possible, it's not a good idea and it would be anything but "easy" since it'd involve massive amounts of hacks and scripting.

Aside from being more fun (which it absolutely is), and aside from it having a great MP mode that Crysis lacks, the framerate of Crysis is noticably lower even in that video.

If it was intended to show off the superiority, it failed. I got motion sick just watching that for a few seconds, the framerate is terrible.
