Old games

I divide games into those I play on my circa 1997 dino (with Win98) and my circa 2006 WinXP "rig".

I havent used the dino in quite some time - the last things I played on it were an old NHL hockey game (that I got for free from freecycle) and Monkey Island 4, which works better on that (but I never finished)

Ive actually played some low spec games on the newer machine - Age of Kings, mainly - though it SHOULD have run on the dino, there was a particular HW/SW conflict.

I played Half Life, which is from the era we're talking about, but being a 3d FPS wouldnt have run on my old dino.


But mainly Ive tried to play more recent games. Recently Ive played RON, the Sims, and Crusader Kings on the newer machine, all of which are from 2000 - 2004. which is new compared to what youre playing, and to what I think of as old games, but evidently folks here still think of them as old games.

I kept an old computer (new from 1994-ish) for my beloved old games up until about 2003, when it finally died. I could have repaired it, but it wasn't worth the time, effort and money.

The only old games I'd play on occasions are Colonization and Ultima VII. I can't find my Col CD anymore (I didn't throw it away but heck, where did I put it?) and hence have to resort to FreeCol. For Ultima VII I have Exult, which works just fine.

ToB is nothing like the pleasantness BG1 with kobolds and forest creatures and an occasional mage, but it probably makes more sense to finish the saga with a more challenging pace

but yes, perhaps they were rushing to finish it and focus more on neverwinter nights. i have really nothing to complain about, i have barely touched ToB let alone icewind dale2 which has been collecting dust for oh so long time

i figure korgan/minsc/edwin/viconia/valgyar/ranger combo will get me through it fastest

I wish I still had my 486. Windows 3.1 was a useless program I never used. Doom, Colonization and Civ 1 were my gaming mainstays. The internet was an exotic thing my friend had. Ahhh...

I wonder if I'll feel as nostalgic for this XP box I currently use?

I liked Doom very much in its time. I lost interest in FPS later, during the Doom 2 period.

By the way, speaking of old games and getting people all nostalgic reminds me of Settlers 2 TNG. Settlers 2 is voted the best Settler sequel by most people, but "The Next Generation" wasn't much of a success. Sure it looks neat and dandy and copies the functions of the original game 1-to-1, but for the love of God, it's about ten years old. Games have developed in complexity and depth, and people expect more from a game nowadays than old games like Settlers 2 can provide. It kind of defiled the good memories I had about the original Settlers 2. It will be the last remake of an old game I buy; I rather keep my good memories or go back to the original to have a nostalgy trip for a short time, if that is possible.

Settlers was good, if you enjoy to watch moving pixel clusters and imagine they're people. I found it enjoyable, but then, I'm a masochist when it comes to games.

Settlers 2 preserved the Settlers charm, was more complex and had much better graphics.

Settlers 3 started to spoil the series.

EDIT: By the way I'm surprised you like Settlers, Spikey. Isn't it a bit too SIMesque for you?

No, Settlers has a decent amount of depth, particularly when you consider the time it was released.

I'm playing Merchant Prince II.

Originally, there was a Merchant Prince that never sold well until it was renamed "Machiavelli." Why this slightly updated version went back to the Merchant Prince moniker, I'll never know.
