Oh, I forgot to mention one of the cooler gameplay bits: the physics and destructible environments are actually meaningful. I found myself shooting down trees (with the MG turret) in order to get a better field of fire against enemy infantry.
That alone sounds like it could make the game worth playing. I don't like what I'm hearing about the performance, though, I don't have a quad-core here. Hopefully Crysis could run here.

That's because he's crazy. 1) Bioshock has much smaller environments and 2) Bioshock doesn't have the awesome water.
The character models are a little better too, I think.
DX9 or DX10 water? Bioshock's DX10 water is awesome.

Because the most important part is the physics of the water. Crysis has good water, but I don't see why it's better than BioShock's.
To be honest, Crysis reminded me a LOT of Far Cry. While the graphics are pretty and vast, it's just not a really fun game. Makes a great benchmark, though.

I never played Far Cry. What I played of the demo I would have enjoyed, had I been more familiar with the controls and actually had a decent framerate during the most important parts.

Well... it can't be any worse
Bioshock gameplay:
"Look, a zombie, let's shoot him with this stupid ugly gun... "
"Look, another zombie, let's throw a stupid fireball at him..."
"Wow, two more zombies... let's go knock them out with our wrench.."
Etc, etc, etc
Unlike Far Cry, I can actually sneak around in this one. My first play through of the demo took me almost 5 hours, because I spent almost the entire time sneaking, crawling from bush to bush waiting until I could ambush soldiers singly. There are still a few strange things with the AI; for example, at one point there are three Korean soldiers standing around talking near a pickup truck. There was no way for me to sneak past them on the side of the road I was on, so I elected to take them out. From a firing position where only one of the three was visible, I shot that one with a single silenced bullet to the head, and the other two (holding a conversation!) didn't react at all, they just stood there. If I failed to kill one of them with a shot, or they cried out (happens sometimes with a pistol) then the others react, but the crumpling body with a bullet in its head doesn't seem to cause any alarms.
I'm definitely getting the full game, but my system can't handle it at high details. Athlon X2 4800+, 2 gigs PC3200, Geforce 6800 Ultra 256 meg card, and an Audigy 2. I'm running at 1024x768 resolution, 2x AA, most detail settings at Medium. I think I have shadow and physics set to low, post processing and volumetric and sound to high. This is keeping my framerate in the playable area. I don't know the exact number as I haven't checked it, but I'd guess low 30s, since cranking details up higher gives me a noticable slowdown.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

At least Doom 3 had different types of enemies

Bioshock was a great game, IMO. Easily at least 9.0/10. However, at the same time I think it might just be the biggest case of wasted potential in recent years. Their decision to completely eliminate all challenge and make Bioshock a complete cakewalk does ruin much of the game. Not that it becomes bad. It's still great, but it could've been even beyond that.
Anyway, looks like I'll have a couple of spare hours tonight - so downloading the demo now. Blessed may be torrents and fast connections
I'm all intrigued about the gameplay. The game looks great but I don't care for the full version if graphics is all it has - now, if the gameplay is good...

Apparently, Vista sucks even harder than anyone thought. Devs/publishers are intentionally throttling graphics artificially in an attempt to push DX10.
In Crysis, you can, apparently, strip out the throttling and get the highest res settings to work in DX9:
