  • half-life 2 sucks

A shooter should let me shoot people, with more than a goddamn pistol. It should not make me spend most of my time figuring out where I'm supposed to go next, then occasionally fighting really boring policement with pistols, and the occasional plant (that always have slopes and gasoline barrels next to them, oh how clever).

Also, Gordon Freeman should be able to jump more than a foot.

Reading forums recently, this opinion is about par for the course. I agree, of course -- I did when HL2 first came out too. It's just a plodding game with one-trick gameplay. Then there's just some dreadfully boring levels that never seem to end (like the boat level).

It's very very overrated. HL1 was vastly superior. I consider it to be an average shooter-adventure game, nothing more.

The Combine soldiers are also INCREDIBLY resistant to bullets...ridiculous.

I'm never drawn to shooters for long term gaming. While I thought Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were good games, I grew tired of the gameplay. There are so many FPS and the concept really hasn't changed for years now. Sure they add physics and better graphics but in the end, it's still shoot x go to objective ad infinitum.

That's the problem, HL2 isn't just "shoot, then move, then shoot more." It's "solve random dumb puzzle, then engage in fairly uninspired combat, then run around looking for the exit for awhile, repeat." In an FPS, the puzzle should be the combat, not some distinct element.

Did you really find the puzzles that bothersome? First time I played there were maybe only two or three puzzles I found to be unintuitive and there really aren't too many to be honest. I mean it was no worse then Doom.

They're irritating and pointless. There's also the fact that it's not immediately obvious, even in combat situations, where you're supposed to go next.

I found Half-Life 2 so boring, I didn't bother finishing; nor do I really care to. Actually, I got lost in some derelict apartments. Didn't help having glitchy Steam messing things up either.

All first person shooters are fairly tedious. The only thing that makes them worthwhile is a good story and a feeling of immersion.

Sounds like you're having some difficulty playing the game Kuci.

In general, I found the game boring, HL1 is by far the better of the two, but that doesn't mean HL2 is as bad as you're making it out to be. The graphics, settings (environment), physics were all really enjoyable, the storyline was mediocre and the ending sucked, but overall, the game is still better than most FPS games that come out.

It's not hard. Nothing has been particularly challenging, just irritating. Like when I spent 10 minutes running all over the goddamn Scarab in Halo 3 looking for its weak spot.

The puzzles are particularly annoying becuase once you actually know the puzzle is there, the solution is obvious.

Agreed, HL 2 was very dull I didn't bother to finish it either.

                      Sort of like Halo 3???

In any case, I just happened to finish Episode I last night. Too short, and I really don't like running around darkended parking garages for hours on end. Honestly, for a future city where you don't see the citizens use a car once, they sure do have a lot of parking!

In any case, HL2 doesn't have nearly as many puzzles as HL1, and besides the puzzles everything else is fine. The graphics, physics, AI, weapons choices are all above par.

As for the Combine soldiers, they seem to be as resistant to bullets as a soldier using advance alien technology should be. If you use Combine weapons they go down easily, also as it should be.

I don't see how anyone can possibly say the Halo series is plodding. It's pretty breakneck in pace...

HL2 feels like an elderly woman at a supermarket.

I never got super into Halflife 2 SP. I love (and spent more time then on any nonMMO in teh last 3 years or whatever) Counterstrike.

Becasue it is the same thing, over and over again. Enter room, kill. Enter, room kill. Enter room, kill.

And oh the tactical options. Enter room, bum rush. Enter room, bum rush. Enter room, bum rush.

In any case, why are there no houses in Earth cites?

I like Halo 3, I like HL2, but the critisisms most level against one or the other are present in both.

Halo is less about room-entering and more about epic battles. HL2 has tried to match them valiantly, but failed.

                              Halo also has better weapons.

And no, the criticisms of HL2 cannot be leveled at Halo.

                              1) Slow-ass pace
                              2) Boring, repetitive puzzles
                              3) Vehicles suck
                              4) Too much reliance on physics for gameplay mechanics (something they've somewhat conceded in EP2 with what they call "gameplay layering" -- apparently you can have more than one type of boring gameplay per game!)
                              5) Boring enemies (Combines -- least interesting enemy EVER?)
