It surprises me to see Madden NFL in the list. I previously couldn't even think of American football games beyond a generic blur and I would have figured the FIFA series is bigger. I'm also surprised Sonic the Hedgehog isn't featuring while GTA is ranking #4.

Wiki states the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise sold over 45 million units, though it doesn't cite a reference. Can't find numbers for the FIFA franchise, anyone knows them? What about Warcraft?

Not me . That may be because of my geographic location, but Madden is an institution. There are people that just buy every new year it because... well, it's a new Madden! At least FIFA has to compete with PES. Madden was always top dog in American football, even with you had NFL 2K(year) or whatever else.

Hell, it's made Madden himself into an institution in the US.

GTA has been bigger more recently, and video games have sold more currently than they have in the past. I'm wouldn't be surprised if GTA: San Andreas has sold more than any Sonic game.

There are what, 17-18 years of madden games, spread over every conceivable platform (dont know about ngage or mobile). That's a ton of units every year.

What's interesting to me is the increasing irrelevance of Nintendo. Yes, those games on the list have huge sales, but every generation the sales decrease for the sequels -- by contrast, many of those games listed have more success each iteration.

                Halo 1 & 2 "only" sold 14.5 million copies, last I checked.

It's a phenomenon for a different reason. It has the highest attach rates to its console not seen since Mario Brothers on the NES.

Most of those franchises had the virtue of being available on multiple consoles as well. Not to mention how many versions they have (Final Fantasy, GT, Mario, Madden, etc).

How did Mario sell so well? I didn't like it that much. I preferred Superfrog. Sonic was ok too, but Superfrog was so much better.

The Half-Life franchise is bigger, not considering Halo 3.

Dude. This is Super Mario we're talking about. He ranks with Chewbacca and Bart Simpson as major icons of our era.

                        1. Mario
If Galaxy can't top sunshine, then the Wii is in big trouble. ~6m for Sunshine.

                        2. Pokemon
Diamond/Pearl (DS) will soon pass the previous Red/Green (GBA) but probably won't beat Ruby/Sapphire (a prior GBA)

                        3. The Sims
Original sold many many milions more than the sequal(s)
                        -non nintendo

                        4. Final Fantasy
FF12 sold fewer than X-2 (not by much), but quite a bit less than X, IX, VIII, VII

                        5. GTA
Going up, but based on the intall base when its released in when, March? imho, it might be hard pressed to top Andreas' 14-15 million

                        6. Tetris
                        uhhh, yeah.

                        7. Madden
awkward to look at since so many plats, but seems to me to be diminishing a bit in sales. (looking at older ps2 numbers compared to the recent release)

                        8. Zelda
TP split across 2 consoles has outsold Windwaker
Phantom Hourglass should easily outsell Minnish Cap
Link's Crossbow Training may outsell the Wand of Gamelon....

                        9. Donkey Kong
                        See tetris

                        10. GT
Will see a huge huge plunge based on install base alone...

So, I can definitely see your point...

                          am I predictable or what?

I will point out that this article is obviously counting pack in games towards its numberings, hence the Tetris and Mario numbers.

If that's the case, then the "wii" games (wii sports/play/fit/motorsports/watersports/bukakkesports) will likely enter this list at the end of the generation, what with Donkey Kong a dead franchise.

The top 10 is slightly different, with GTA several places lower.

Also note the FIFA series isn't in the list. As a matter of fact, I couldn't find any comprehensive numbers at all on the internet. Considering FIFA 06 alone sold over 3.6 million units, it's hard to believe the entire franchise didn't manage over 10 million.
