You can run SS 2 in XP at least: How To Run System Shock 2 on Windows XP/2000

I dunno about the first one though.

I'm not certain about Vista or about the first System Shock, but I was easily able to get SS2 to run on Windows XP. There is an issue with the cutscenes, that involves the old Indeo video codec used in all the Dark Engine games, but there's both a workaround you can use to make them play and a newer version of the codec that solved the entire problem.

Right... there's still Pripyat and Chernobyl itself, and you're not getting there unless you shut the scorcher down.
After checking again, I'm at Chernobyl now. Fighting through the city was "easy", then I got to the power plant, countdown started, I got underground... and that's when things got tough. There seems to be an endless supply of cheating heavy armed and very protected stalkers down there. The stalkers are coming from nowhere it seems. The area is linear, I have taken everybody out in my path, then all of the sudden I get attacked from behind which should be impossible (based on what happened just before, and how the area is)

You couldn't get past the Brain Scorcher by yourself, so several areas remained off-limits

Wait, I see that I just mixed up a few things... I got the Brain Scorcher, it's the wishing machine I'm trying to find
But what do you mean with you can't do it by yourself? I don't remember having any special problems. Sure there where LOTS of enemies, but the only help you needed was a good gun, lots of bullets and good protection

          Or did I miss something?

Hmm, I thought the inside of Chernobyl was pretty easy.

And I just worded it badly. I meant that you can't get to Pripyat or past it without shutting the Scorcher down. Meaning, if you ignore the story and just roam around, you're not getting there...

The issues of Stalker, though, don't get me started...
There are quite a few bugs but i'm still enjoying generally. I've just restarted with 1.04 after getting to the army warehouses with 1.03 and continual crashing.

Problem with 1.04 is that the spawning now occurs up to 10 minutes after I enter an area. Can make it pretty tough!

It also means that until areas like the bar spawn I can't get to the blue box stashes with all my goodies in.Not so bad when I know to wait in area as it's full of zombies but i think I may struggle in new areas. Almost but not quite yet unplayable.

One of boards suggests that it couldbe related to the new dual core code in the latest patch so i might need to try it with one disabled.

Maybe the problem is related to the number of med kits I brought: two

I've only used med kits in very few situations, so I didn't really bring any

As I'm under attack constantly from all sides I don't have time to heal

Hopefully I'll have more luck tomorrow

Yeah, you should definitely be well-stocked when you enter. I must have had around 20 medkits on me... coupled with two powerful guns, made it all fairly easy.

Deus Ex is amazing you should definitely play that LotM. I love single player games more in the style of Doom and Doom 2 where there's a million monsters and you are constantly firing and shooting. Not many FPS come out today like that where it's basically a FPS arcade shooter packed with weak enemies.

When someone tries to release a game like that these days, they get criticized for providing brainless entertainment and a game of 1995 standards...
