I went to VG chartz and looked at the latest stats. The European PS3 wasn't released until much later than the Euro 360 was, so this counts in Microsoft's favour. Let's just call it one year's difference, since it's easier to work out that way (I think the difference was one or two weeks shy of a year except in PAL territories).

As of this time last year Microsoft had shipped 4,217,149 million consoles worldwide.

As of right now, at roughly the same time, Sony has shipped 4,391,057 PS3 consoles worldwide.

You can even set the graph to compare worldwide sales. It shows the PS3 tracking the 360 in shipments. I've attached it below. It does show the Wii smacking both of them.
Wow, leave it to Apple to make an incredibly unfriendly chart to color blind people.

How is a chart that I took a screenshot of in my browser, supposed to be blamed on Apple, who to my knowledge do not own vgchartz, nor supply their online graphing software?

            • Financial Times reports that Wii has sold more than 360! And it's sold units, not shipped from manufacturer ones, as is usual to refer to(hint: iPhone). The whole article is for paying customers only, but two Norwegian gaming news sites tell that the numbers are per July 31st and that the numbers are 9 million (Wii), 8.9 million (360) and 3.7 million (PS3).

              • And that's despite launching much later, and they still seem to be flying off the shelves. I'm sure Asher will have an explanation though.

Hype and low pricepoint. It's certainly not selling by virtue of the game library. There are only 3 games above 90% for Wii on gamerankings, and two of those are GameCube games. The Xbox 360 has 7 games above 90%.

Similarly, # of games above 80% for Wii is 8.
The # of games above 80% for 360 is 56.

I'm sure people will have an explanation though.

The Wii's hardware sales are not that important, really. Wii software sales continue to suck, so it looks like people are buying it for decoration only.

                    • If you want to really see what matters, lets compare games. Wii has the advantage of consoles sold, so this isn't even a fair fight.

Halo 3 vs Metroid Prime 3 -- what do you guys think? Slaughter?

So you mean the Wii is selling incredibly well despite its lacklustre line-up at present, and will no doubt sell even better when its top tier games like Super Mario Galaxy and SSBB come out?

                        I agree.

                        • I don't agree at all. Which Mario fan does not have a Wii already?

I think Nintendo is saturating the market based on hype, and it's incorrect to think there's another untapped Nintendo-faithful market that's large enough to be meaningful that is without a Wii right now and remain without a Wii after Zelda and Metroid.

The point is this: The Wii is pushing a ton of hardware, there's no doubt about it. The problem is, these people are not buying games in general.

                          • Sales lists don't agree with you. In Japan, the DS and Wii reigns, and here in Norway 360, PS2 and Wii alternate on having most games in the top 20.

Japan is its own weird little market, and irrelevant to the discussion. Do you or I live in Japan? No.
