Correct, you don't get a gun until you run across the guard fighting the zombie. As long as he's alive he'll tag along with you, and he has unlimited ammo. When he dies, the Glock drops to the floor and you can pick it up.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

i started over again, as last time Id wrecked my health cause I didnt know how to climb DOWN a ladder.

This time I found places faster (thanks Q)

But this time when i came out of the test chamber, more guys were alive. The guard closer to the test chamber was still alive (though he didnt follow me)

Is "the world" really following a more or less random pattern of monstrer action, or the time it takes me to get out, or whatever?

In lots of FPS's ladders are more dangerous than monsters

There is no randomness, maybe you didn't wait for the scientist to reanimate him the first time around?

It's not timed generally, there are triggers when you reach certain points.

ok, last time I played was a couple of days ago.

I failed to keep the guard alive, but got his gun. Found a couple of health kits, used the soda machines to improve my health, found the ammo in one guards locker, and generally seem to have explore sector C, except for one research room I cant seem to climb into.

I tried to exit sector c, but then this dude knocks the bridge down. I get one more ammo clip, and thats it. Now Im stuck, I dont know how to get out. There was one scientist who was willing to follow me, but he couldnt get past some rubble I could jump over.

What now? This is starting to be a bit "myst" like

I'm trying to place exactly where this is. There's a spot where you have to jump in through a window into a flooded office and make your way around the furniture, and there's another place where you have to slide crates around to make a stairway to a broken ceiling where you can jump up into a crawlspace. Is it beyond these points?

By the way, you do know you can smash the wooden crates with the crowbar, right? There's at least one hall blocked completely by crates you have to break to go through.

not that far along I think. I'll go back and look for crates, though.

More Details on the Bridge? Is it the Half-Brigde where you get of the Intro-Wagon, or the Bridge over some Water? Or is it further along?

                        Cant remember no Sector C

I guess there have to be extensive Walktroughs on the Net by now *g*

The bridge near the reception area where I get off the tram, right.

When I was playing RPGs, folks warned me away from walkthroughs. Do they spoil things less in FPS?

Well right now you just need some practice at how the game works. Leave walkthroughs for later in case you get really stuck.

After some reflection, I'm thinking it might be in the sewers area. I recall there's a spot where you come to a broken bridge across a canal populated by bullsquids. I think you go down one side where there are some stairs, find a way either across or under (there's one section where you swim underwater but I can't remember precisely where it is) and back up the other side.
