    1. Yes, combining different genres is a challenge. Often it doesnt work, but as Sid himself said, sometimes it does

    2. Spore will be in sequence, which is not quite the same thing as going in and out of a genre, a la Covert Action, Pirates!, TW, or even Imperialism. That doesnt mean it wont still be a challenge. I just think Will Wright is up to it.

    3. Of course Soren isnt going to be designing the mid game from scratch. With a year to go though, is it so unlikely hed be working on last minute fixes and improvements?

    4. Im very disappointed in what y'all have to say about Pirates! Thats one game where I definitely intended to get the more recent game (which Im quite sure will run on my rig) and skip the older version.

I liked the current Pirates! but once I had done the main story it just became a part-time time killer.

I fear the middle part of the game will be about designing buildings and vehicles compared to fuzzy aliens.

I'm just not interested in designing things.

Yeah, I mean I at least understand the concept of creating a creature and finding optimal/cool-looking combinations, but I don't want to be an architect just to make a building look cool.

you shouldn't have to, you can pick a pre-designed building from a menu if you don't want to build one.

              Read in Wikipedia
EA has plans to expand Spore's features even further. There are plans for the creation of a type of Spore collectible card game based on the creatures, buildings, vehicles, and planets that have been created by the players. There are also indications of plans for the creation of customized creature figurines; some of those who designed their own creatures at E3 2006 later received 3D printed models of the creatures they created.[49]
Collectible card and creature figurines! LOL!

I recently read somewhere that players will be able to print out their Spore characters, using 3D printers.

The utility of the Internet is rapidly increasing... In the near future firms will perhaps only sell blueprints and customers print out the actual item... Amazing!

Yeah, we might even have to make our own games too. Oh, wait..........

Though console owners will have a cornucopia of titles to choose from this fall, PC gamers were looking forward to one in particular. Spore, the hugely ambitious new project from Sims creator Will Wright, was slated to be out later this year and was presumed by many to be one of Electronic Arts' tentpole holiday releases.

Well, presume no longer. Today during a post-earnings report conference call with analysts, newly reinstalled EA CEO John Riccitiello shattered many gamers' dreams by announcing that Spore is no longer on the publisher's 2008 fiscal year calendar, which ends on March 31, 2008.

"Spore is a title we have enormous confidence in," Riccitiello told analysts. "I've had the chance to review the title three times in my short return to the EA, and it looks fantastic. I will also tell you that its release will be right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal '08], if not sometime in early fiscal '09, so we don't feel comfortable in forecasting it." No specific mention was made of the DS version of the game.

As is often the case with high-profile titles, quality control concerns were behind the delay. "We're focusing on quality to make sure we build a franchise that feels more like The Sims, a franchise that we hope...to see around for some time in the future." Riccitiello promised, hinting the publisher has big plans for the property.

                                or maybe even later
