So, you can't just stay in one battleground if you want a full set of armor.

I'm just going to do it for the fun of it. To be a true hunter. Yes that means ganking unsuspceting people who have pvp turned on.

      • Came across a blue bird, talon something, I was level 25, it was a 31; it kept flying where I wanted to walk, so I decided to have a go and kill it. I sent in my pet to take the aggro, my pet eventually died (1st time ever!) and I was next in line, as it was coming towards me I knew I was going to lose because if my pet can't take it, and its health is still 50/50, there's no way I can take the punch. But I planted every trick I had, flames, shocks, poisons, freezes and with one nice big health potion, I managed to kill it with just a bare minimum of health left. I received a meager 150xp from it, but what I picked up from the beast was a talon, which was a quest, it told me to give the talon to someone, from which I got 2500xp points for killing the beast. I am assuming this quest is made available if you kill it at a low level. I also realised I can kill things that are of higher level than myself more often.

        Just a little story there.

P.S. This gives me incentive to try and kill those 4 riders found in the southern barrens, but there are 4 of them and they stick together! I'd have to be a level 35 to even get close to killing them all.... right?

        • They're elite as well, though I think you're talking about the ripper which is an elite as well. 4 elites is going to be a struggle though.

          • Oh yes you're right, they are elite. Bastards!

                Here's my underwhelming update:
                - my "main", a Tauren Druid 24 is stalled while waiting for friends to have time to play

                - started a Tauren Warrior to kill time and he is at 21 now

                - also started an Orc Hunter and he is at 18 - using a Dreadmaw Crocolisk for pet - he is a tough nut - only time he died was when we were taking on (accidentally) two things 3 lvls higher than us.

                - just started an Undead Priest, lvl 2!

Just now learning to use the Auction House - money to be made that I had been missing out on.

                • I can kill things higher level than me. Normally I set the limit at 4. I may be able to do 5 though.

In strangelthorn I killed an elite 2 levels higher than me. That panther thing. Died the first time, but he had very little health left. Another try and I won.

But I'm realizing some elites are stronger than others. Some have a white dragone around their picture, and some have a gold dragon. What's up with that? And some creatures I see a white dragon around their picture bubble, but in the bottom right it doesn't say they are elite. .

As I said, not all elites are alike. Some hit really hard. That robot first mate in darkshore is an example. That thing hits hard.

And I found out last night giants hit hard too. . They have a the gold dragon thingie. So I suspect gold means they are tougher elites. It makes sense giants are tough.

I was the same level. Normally I can take out an elite the same level as me if they are by themself. This giant in stranglethorn (captain's chest quest) tore my pet a new one, then proceeded to tear me a new one.

yeah I learned about the AH. Only way I could afford a mount at 40. I'm still not sure if I'll be able to scrape together 900 gold at 60, however.

                    And yes I'm hooked. .

                    • Do you train all your weapon skills? I've been trying to keep them all up, say if my max is 100 then I've got all my weapon skills at between 85 and 95. Lots of downsides to this though - carrying multiple weapons, banking multiple weapons, sometimes you're not outfitted your best for tough enemies, etc. Maybe it's not worth it? I suppose the reason I'm doing it is so that I can use a wider array of things that might get dropped.

                      Comment

                      • Never. Seems like too much hassle. As an orc I get +5 in axes. So I've stuck with axes the whole time. I did train to use 2 handers, but never bothered. I use 2 1 handed axes. So my 2 handed skill is still at 0 I believe. I find I get enough decent drops eventually that it isn't a problem.

I don't see much difference in weapons. Or am I missing something? In Diablo 2 maces (and blunt weapons) did more damage against undead, but I don't see that indicated anywhere in this game. So is there that much difference between using an axe and a sword? I'm not sure.

I don't know all the ins and outs of combat mechanics.

And is unarmed a viable way to do damage? Unlikely. And you wouldn't get any bonuses from weapons you are carrying. I just wonder as I get the disarm skill used against me alot. My unarmed us up to 50's now.

                        • I don't know much about the precise mechanics either. However I can tell you that I think I have noticed differences using different weapons. Obviously taking something down with a shield and weapon is slower. Guns/Bows/Crossbows are different in terms of reload. Unarmed is FAST - get a good pair of weapon gloves and you can get better DPS than a sword/axe/mace it seems.

                          Comment

                          • No real difference bewteen weapons anymore (There use to be).

However, Polearms generally have agility bonuses. Maces more often have caster bonuses, while swords have some as well (but axes are almost entirely just melee bonuses). The sword caster bonuses are more likely to be damage while the maces are the ones with heals. Staves are almost entirely magic bonuses.

I think that thrown just sucks. I think that currently guns are an easier range option than bows, but bows (and crossbows) are still competent.

Additionally, two handed is better damage for some setups while dual 1-handed is better for others (I think for dual 1-handed to be better you have to have talents though).

The classes I have mostly played have been Druid and Paladin, both who can't dual weild and so for melee damage I would go 2-handed.

                            • I have very little experience with hand weapons. My understanding is that a few rogues use them, but that most rogues go mace or dagger.

                              • It isn't really necessary to level all of the weaponskills you can wield as you go, but if you are a masochist, then go for it.

It keeps all options open for the future.

I always used only 2 handed maces, 1-2 handed swords and polearms pre expansion.

When I went into outlands, one of the first quest rewards was a 2 handed axe that buried my sword/polearm/hammer.

So, to use it I had to level up axes for a while. (That buzzard in the blasted lands was pissed).

But, even if I had passed it up, more diverse weapons were waiting, so I would have eventually gotten back to my hammers and swords.

                                oh well.
