Because, the only way to have Space Marines in there as PCs, and keeping it at all balanced, is to completely nerf them.

Or make it excruciatingly hard to play until the end game content when all the PCs are gonna be WTFPWN anyway.

Incidently, did you see the DoW2 reference in the article?

So no CSM PCs either? What PC character would you allow for Chaos? Cultists?

Many PCs will never be WTFPWN if they stay even remotely close to fluff. IG as an example.

Yep. Or make it damn hard for CSMs(maybe having them fight Astartes NPCs or a buncha Guard or something)

Many PCs will never be WTFPWN if they stay even remotely close to fluff. IG as an example.
They will if they're modeled off of:

        The Last Chancers
        Tanith First and Only
        Ciaphias Cain
        Catachans
        Any Cadian

Come on, it wasn't that hard to find IG that WTFPWN. Hell, Ibram Gaunt has killed CSMs in hand-to-hand combat before, Ciaphias Cain has came damn close(actually, something like having his aide with the Multi-Melta stand by and act casual, then have him blast the CSM when it gets overconfident) And Cadian Karskin have been known to take on Daemonhosts with knives.

Not to mention Pyskers, Sisters of Battle, inquisitors(who will likely have a Retinue)

IG have only been known to take down 1-2 CSM only by the most outlandish of circumstances and even then only just in the knick of time. I mean a single Astartes is worth 10x his number of regular troops fluff wise.

The forces of the Inquisition (SoB, etc) aren't just any regular Joe when it comes to fighting the forces of Chaos.

So? Since when has PCs(of any RPG) been the "average joe" of the universe?

Then you might as well ban IG as a PC then as that is the sole appeal of the army.

No, the appeal is mass numbers. "Average Joe" in the WH40K franchise is some poor SOB working in a factory every day of the year

I think a Necromunda MMO would work better than one set in 40K proper. Solves the Marine/CSM problem as well.

That's a dramatic understatement given the canonical figure of 25k SM and the size of the galaxy.

I don't think that standard IG will be playable.. maybe they will be 'summons' or something?

Obviously they'll artificially weaken SM a la DoW, but SM are too badass not to be PC's.

The problem with this theory is that W40k: Dawn of War already sold very well despite being "niche."

Yeah, from the IG, if playable, you will probably be a commisioner with several troops to command..

I hope that Tyranids would be playable.. but I sort of expect at the start CSM and SM will be the main playable groups.

first off Ciaphias Cain was a punk, compared to Yarrick. can you imagine an octogenarian chasing after Ghazkull Mag Uruk Thraka?

second of all: what, no Death Korps of Kreig?

Uhhh, no. There's approximately 1000 chapters with a normal fighting strength of 1000 Space Marines. Quite a bit more than 25k.
