Is it in this thread? I've no idea.

The 360 sold 250K in Jan 06 but was still severely supply constrained, moreso than the Wii.

Asher, is it just off by some constant? Does it randomly jerk around or something? The way I play I never look at the remote any more than I look at my mouse; controlling the cursor seems almost as smooth.

Note that Wii was still availibility constrained in January. Also note these are US numbers only - presumably Wii would look even better worldwide, which would include Japan.

It's not off by some constant, it's a combined effect of being slightly laggy and being off -- sometimes to the left, sometimes to the right, sometimes up, sometimes down...depends where I'm pointing.

I believe what I'm describing is the "uncanny valley" of control schemes.

What exactly is pertinent about sales figures when the discussion is about control schemes?

Didn't it ask you to point at the corners of the screen at the beginning? Sounds like you just miscalibrated it. And yes, it is slightly but noticeably laggy. That hasn't been a problem for me.

I don't recall being asked to point at the corners of the screen, no.

I also do not see any way to REcalibrate it, if it WAS possible (which it is not).

None of the other wii owners seem to be mentioning this problem. Perhaps there is an element of user error.

Perhaps because they're too enamored with their new toys to be objective.

They probably haven't played their consoles in weeks...

Wii: Is The Magic Wearing Off?
                          February 19th 2007

Over at computerandvideogames.com writer Mike Jackson has taken a bold stance on an idea that I've been floating around on the podcast for weeks "Is the Wii really all that?". Personally, I have not turned mine on for over three weeks, and with the recent rumors concerning the slipping release date for Metroid, it looks like it might remain inactive for even longer. While there's no denying it, the Wii has had an amazing launch and many people still scour their local shopping mall like buzzards searching for one. But, with anything that receives this much hype, a certain amount of backlash is to be expected; (remember when people still thought Dane Cook was funny?) But, the thing about a little backlash is that sometimes it snowballs.

Right, now I certainly don't hate my Wii, it's just not rocking my socks off. However, I was lucky enough to get mine on launch day without waiting in line and I paid the normal price. What if I had paid a premium or spent a ridiculous amount of time to hunt one down? How would I feel after whipping through Zelda (which was a hell of a lot better than Gamespot’s 8.8,) and then discovering every other game out right now either sucks out loud or is just another piss poor collection of weak sauce mini games. How disappointed would I be when I finally got my hands on a HD cable and then saw that it actually makes my games look worse?

The point is that as time goes on, chinks in the Wii armor are starting to show. I want to love my Wii, I really do. But, after getting my heart broke by the Dreamcast (sniff) I don't love so easy anymore. You've got to prove your worthy to me, and the way to do that is through kick ass mind blowing games. I can honestly say that in my opinion there is not one game out there yet that is truly a Wii game. Every single title either has the Wii controls tacked on (Zelda, Need for speed) or does such piss poor job of using them that it only serves to show the systems weaknesses (Red Steel).

Now I'll admit, with 4 million units sold since November, it's extremely unlikely that the Wii will go out the way Dreamcast did. "So, why even mention the Dreamcast then?" you may ask. Well, unlike so many other people I am not 100% sure about the Wii's future. At this point it is safe to say that it will see a full 5 to 6 year life span typical of most successful game consoles. Where I differ from most of the Wii Fanboys out there is that I don't think it will be the #1 selling console of this generation. Right now I see 3 main reasons for this:

                          1. Lackluster implementation of online play

The fact that a console launched in 2006 without a single online multi-player game just baffles me. While it's true the Wii is a social machine, not everyone lives in college dorm or even has close friends that are gamers. And while at first it's easy to get people to come over and try the Wii, if they are not gamers like you, over time they will lose interest. I don't know if you've noticed but Wii Sports is kind of lame by yourself. Whenever Wi-Fi games start to trickle in, there is going to be another speed bump for Nintendo. Two words: "Friend Codes". Great for parents wanting to keep their kids safe, freaking retarded for adults just trying to hop online to pwn some noobs.

                          2. No HD for you!

480p is bull****. And you’re kidding yourself if you’re holding onto to the idea that the Wii can someday put out an HD with just a little firmware upgrade. Forget it; the thing is stuck on SD for life. Not such a big deal right now, but as we go on down the road and more people make the jump to HD TVs it's going to become more of an issue. Now, before you hit me with the Gameplay Over Graphics line, let me say **** YOU. I have money; I could have afforded a more expensive Wii that was bumped up to do at least 720p. Why does it have to be either or? Why not Graphics AND Gameplay? Can you imagine how sweet a system would be if it had the ingenuity of the Wii-Mote plus near Xbox 360 graphics. I mean, they didn't need to go toe to toe in graphics department, but they could have given me something that at least looked okay on my LCD TV.

                          3. Where the hell are the games?

There is one thing in life that is as certain as death and taxes; Nintendo makes awesome 1st party titles. Without a doubt over the next five years Nintendo is going to blow our little minds with amazing versions of the old classics, A new Mario game, a new Metroid, a new Smash Brothers. They will all use the Wii mote to its full extent, break new ground for gameplay and drip production quality. But, will sparsely separated 1st party games be enough to satisfy the hardcore? Because, if the current batch of 3rd party games is an indicator of what we can expect from Ubisoft, SEGA, EA and the rest then we might have a problem. Every 3rd party title so far has been a flaming **** ball of a game. It feels like to me, that they have treated the Wii like a popular movie or comic book license that can be exploited. Do they just say to themselves "Hey, let’s half ass a game and tack on the Wii mote and the kids will go nuts for it, because it uses the Wii mote to do thing X". I mean look at the Wii version of Far Cry, what the hell are they trying to pull? Mark my words if the big game publishers keep trying to take cross platform titles and shoe horn the Wii mote controls in as an afterthought, we can expect more crap. I say build it for the Wii from the ground up or don't build it at ALL.

Now obviously my first two points are kind of set in stone but the third could easily change. I mean who knows, maybe the new Sonic Wii game will rock (I doubt it but, it could happen). But what if the reason the next Metriod keeps getting pushed back is because it's not very good? With games coming out at a such slow pace people put a lot of expectation on them. Meaning a few soso 1st party games in a row could affect peoples opinion of the Wii dramatically.

Do I really think the Wii will crumble under its own hype factor? No, and I sure hope not. But, you have to consider the old Saying "the bigger they are the harder they fall." Right now, people love the Wii, but all you need to do is call an ex-wife to be reminded that love and hate are the flipside of the same coin. Consumers are fickle, what was the coolest thing in the world one day could be viewed as old and busted next week.

I know Shiggy and Nintendo have some amazing Wii games on the way but, I am an impatient ******* and I want my socks rocking at all times. If you have not managed to find a Wii of your own yet and are going nuts over it, relax. Honestly outside of Zelda, you’re not missing much just yet.

P.S. I ****ing hate mini games, they remind me of dry humping.

wow. He thinks the 360 will outsell the Wii over the entire generation. Wii will only be the number two console, and perhaps not be far behind the 360.

Somehow I dont think the suits at Nintendo will be crying if that happens.

Now at Sony, that will be another story.
