RoN was AoE + a few incremental innovations + some stuff ripped straight out of civ. WH40k: DoW and CoH actually rethought most of the RTS fundamentals; IMO that makes them far more innovative.

edit: and yes, I am aware that those two sentences were absolutely disgusting.

      I liked RoN.

RoL didn't last me near as long.

I have to agree with this - I don't see how anyone can make a case that RoN is more innovative than the recent Relic games.

It's better than CoH but not as fun as Dawn of War.

I likeed the tactical level. The campaigns were truly fun and allowed for a different style of play. Dawn of War was much more linear.

RoN had an completely innovative campaign mode for an RTS game. Among other important innovations I'd cite the research model and importance of research, along with real borders and real diplomacy. It actually could be played diplomatically, in SP at least.

CoH is also pretty damn innovative, though. It's really almost a cross-genre game, micromanaging infantry combat really feels like a squad-level tactical shooters and not a RTS game. Generally, the tactical elements of CoH are great. I haven't had a chance to play much of it - if I do, it's quite possible I'll see CoH as the best RTS released to date.

I only played the demo, wasn't it a Risk-style supermap? That's been done before.

BTW, Big Huge Games are developping Settlers of Catan for the 360. It'll be an Xbox Live title.

CoH is a great game. We've been playing a lot of MP games here around the office. I'm not so enamored with the SP campaign, but that's mainly because there have been so many WWII-American perspective games out there. The MP is a ton of fun though.

Maybe Firaxis will decide to make a good game next time?

Civ4 could have been great, but the scenarios were just awful! Especially the Chinese one.
