flash, i cant recall 1 good game that had graphics as selling point in 2006..... maybe even as far as 05 and 04...
GoW isnt bad game IMO. but it is defintely a rental game. graphics is gonna phase out eventually, obviously... and gameplay isnt good enough to make game last. but then again thats the trend with all games these days...
industry gets so caught up releasing the game with good graphics that gameplay design gets overlooked. It's like the developers almost forgot how to make good games these days....:-pComment

There is definitely a rose tinted specs angle as I have argued many times. However it is also hard to deny that there are plenty of games loaded on eye-candy and lacking in any real quality - they aren't mutually exclusive phenomena.Comment

starcraft is like 11 yrs old. even then after years of not playing it personally, if i watch a replay of sc, i can enjoy it cause the game is THAT well made. I just watched latest WCG matches and I sat at the edge of the seat watching iloveoov take out julyzerg in final 3rd match.
Will GoW be like that say not even 2 yrs from now? i doubt it. i dont think im being biased cause i like starcraft at all. its like comparing chess to tic tac toe.
i havent seen games like starcraft lately. back in the day games DID have better play then any games today, which didnt improve at all, rather it went down hill.... is saying no games today compare to sc far fetched? i dont think one bit at all.Last edited by Zero; January 14, 2007, 19:39.:-pComment

Really, I can name one just off the top of my head, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. I'm sure they are others I just don't own a lot of 360 games. Thinking back the original xbox, Ninja Gaiden Black had both great graphics and awesome gameplay (expect for the damn camera). I'm sure they are countless other, but I don't feel like looking through my games to come up with more examples.Originally posted by Zero

Have you played DOOM or Wolfenstein lately? Compare that to Gears of War
As for RTSes, I was a huge SC/WC3 fan, but give me Company of Heroes over either of those games.
Strategy games are one of the best examples of games with long-term playability. They are less of a cinematic experience and more of a strategic (duh) experience.
They are not game genres that ought to be comparable, and someone who had any real objective opinion would know that.
Gears of War is not about strategy as much as it is about a cinematic action experience. It's got fundamentally less replayability than games like Civ4, WC3, or Starcraft (BTW, WC2 >> WC3), but that's not the point of it. I guess you haven't been to a campus recently. Everyone's playing Company of Heroes as the RTS of choice -- Starcraft has fallen out of favour.
I think this whole angle of discussion you have is just absurd. You take a couple legendary games from Blizzard and compare them vacuously to a bunch of games today which you have clearly never played, then think nothing compares to it.

There are tons of games that have come out that eclipse Starcraft in gameplay, but Zero is a retro/Korean gamer.
