    Re: Large Battles...

Each stack that is led by a named character enters the battle immediately, however, the human only controls one stack (the one that either initiated the battle or was attacked to initiate the battle). The AI runs the rest of the stacks. Stacks led by captains still enter as reinforcements (which was how all additional stacks were treated in STW and MTW).

And how many stacks per side are lead by a named character?

The most I ever saw in RTW was three on both sides, and actually that was with the TFT mod; I hardly ever played vanilla RTW.

I'm not sure what the actual "limit" might be.

Hmm, then those must be pretty big stacks.

Stacks are made up of 20 units and units are made of varying amounts of men.

How bad is the bug with some two-handed units, like dismounted English knights, not being able to attack cavalry except on the charge?

hmmm that sounds weird - you must have some control over the other units of your army(that was the point of the 3D battle sections i thought)?

ah hold on - ok i get it. You control the one army, but if they were more allied armies around the AI will control those when/if they enter the battle as reinforcements.

Still sounds a little weird though - in RTW+MTW you always had 100% control over any of your armies in battle.

Not so in RTW. If two or more allied stacks with named leaders entered a battle, you could only control the units from one of the stacks.

That depends on which faction you're playing. If you're playing the English, it's pretty bad, because you have several different units that all suffer from that problem (billmen, heavy billmen, bill militia and dismounted English knights). You pretty much have to use nothing but armored swordsmen. For any faction which has these units, it makes one or more units in your roster largely useless, because you can't depend on only fighting infantry or only charging. It's a non-issue for factions which don't have any of these units. Those units are all 2 handed axe troops, and the problem appears to be related to the animations.

Those troops aren't terribly great against infantry either. Their attack animation is incredibly slow, so they tend to lose infantry battles against good dismounted-knight-type infantry because of it.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Sorry my mistake - i meant STW+MTW. I havent played RTW!

Animations? that sounds like an odd bug as i would have thought a 'charge' action(or non charge) would still activate the fight, animations or not. Anyway it sounds like this will be quite a major complaint to get fixed in a patch, and CA have been pretty quick with this first patch so its looking good on that score.

Don´t know about STW it has been a long time since I last played it (and I didn´t use Reinforcements in STW very often)
but in MTW AFAIK everything depended on the status of the checkbox next to the reinforcement troops (if it was checked you ceded the control of the reinforcement troops to the AI and AFAIK its standard setting was checked)

As for RTW, as Stuie said, named Characters leading the reinforcement troops meant that those stacks were controlled by the AI no matter if you wanted to control these stacks or not.

In STW once you had them running you could defeat an infinite number of stacks.

The patch mostly delivers - not 100% yet, but lots of good fixes. The 2-handed axe troops are still totally ineffective (as in they score no kills at all) but now that we have the Unpacker we can make a fan-fix to that.
