  • The mods I liked for RTW were the total conversions - like "The First Triumvirate" and "Arthur: Total War" or the upcoming "77BC: Twilight of the Republic". RTR was good too, but that's because the vanilla game deviated way too much from reality.

M2TW on the other hand is a good game out of the box and patched. I haven't found anything that truly cries out to be modded.

Getting to the higher level buildings is just a matter of specializing your cities/castles to focus on a particular upgrade path.

    • I agree modding is a matter of taste, but when discussing how to win a game, modding it shouldn't be the first answer, which it often is on these forums.

Anyway, I tried to take over some foreign traders with my noob traders. They rarely succed, but give a lot of gold when they do. I also tried sending a merchant to Timbuktu, but he was put out of business the first turn he had established. So much efforts and micromanagent just wasted.

I also built some merchants on the gold mines in Brazil. A noob will easily make 200 gpt there.

        • I let the ai build up at the start of a game because i think it makes it tougher if you dont blitz the ai. How many turns do you leave?

but the only place where you can land seems to be the northern tip of the continent, therefore I was missing the time to do so (conquered only Brazil and the carribeans)

                  • ive modded the game to be 6 months turns and show turns as date, it really has made the game much better for me, the only thing i need to do now is get the difficulty level i play at right, to get the best from the game.

I felt campaigns were too rushed before ! although now it has 900 turns it could end up too long for some but I like to play a campaign all the way to total world dominion

I have a top level assasins guild in Antwerp and the murderous bastards it trains are great fun to play with goit me a Milanese faction leader last night, thats the first king ive murdered succesfully

Playing England now and having great fun but i highly reccomend Byzantium, nice units and a challenge to play. Try blocking off the land bridges at constantinople when the pope calls a crusade, and wait for several crusadeing armies to stack up in your province, attack one of them and you will have lots of fun , good training for when the Hordes come and believe me you will need it if you play the standard campaign of 2 years per turn.

                      • Hmmm.... Interesting. It seems that the shield stat isn't helping units in melee. In fact, it is actually HURTING them!

I figured I'd edit the first post here for the benefit of those who may be jumping in in the middle of things. Basically, what follows is a bunch of discussion and research into how shields function in M2TW. You of course can read it for yourself if you like, but for the sake of saving people's time, I'll sum up what's been found for those who are just interested in that: - Shields provide their bonus against ranged attacks, but do not provide their bonus in melee combat. - Shields

                        • These results sound like some of the programmers mistook + for - so that the shield stats are subtracted from the (armor + skill) calue instead of added to them.
(according to the FAUST [Faction and unit stat table] normally shields should be aplied in melee on attacks from the front and the left side, which sounds plausible)

Good to know. Maybe I will stop playing MTW2 for a while till a patch (or plausible explanation from the programmers) has come out.

Gives me some time to finish programming the Access database which should help me managing and specializing my cities (this seems to be really painful if you have large empires, unless you use excel or access to keep track of the building stats and your plans for specialization for the cities)

                          • I am playing my first game and am finding it rather frustrating after RTW. Something is really really wrong, for example, with the AI in battles. I first noted this on the very first battle I played. I put the entire army under AI control and clicked on he enemy. The AI did nothing. It just stood there, perhaps moving units around just a little.

In a later assault on a city, I divided my forces into three to attack from three directions. I put the wing forces under AI control. They just stood there, doing nothing as my main group reached the city center. I had take them off AI to get them to move into the city.

Finally I used a trick I often used in RTW. When a large army has used up its movement points so it cannot attack an adjacent enemy force, I attack it instead with a small force, at times a single cavalry unit. My large force enters as reinforcements and, under RTW, usually wins the battle.

But this time, the reinforcement army lined up facing the enemy. With a 9-1 advantage, I thought it was over for the bad guys. But the AI army just stood there, doing nothing, just like AI had before in earlier battles. I eventually exited.

This cannot be planned. It has to be a bug.

Also, early in the game, I had two nearly-full stacks "dissert" and become rebels, one right after an Inquistor killed my general. I saw no nearby diplomats that could have been responsible. This seemed spontaneous.

What the F is going on?

                            • Have you installed the patch? There was a known issue with the AI being ridiculously passive, which was mostly fixed by the patch. As to the other, any army led by a captain or disloyal general has a chance of deserting anytime it's in the field. They won't desert in cities or castles, nor from a fortress, but other than that it seems to be a small chance every turn. The lower the Authority of the faction leader the more likely it is.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Just started the game. It says this is version 1.0. Is that what yours says?
