In my defence, though, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot else we could have done. Am I reading this wrong, or did Ben Kenobi send spies at both me and Hercules?

Yeah, it does look like it. Is that even allowed under the rules?
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

It isn't the first time it's been done, so my guess is yes.

sending many spies out is legal, the only restriction is that players can't train a spy and use a spy the same turn, even if they have spies stockpiled.

          Interesting.

Now I know who to attack next round.

It's hardly luck that's involved here.

That's assuming you have a next round. I'll let you all know in a couple hours.

can someone remind me if we made battle to the death a default?

EDIT: looked it up in the rules thread, it is.

            someone's getting wasted tonight.

Emperor Naviwinat was greatly displeased at his ally Tashi's betrayal. Both of his bases were captured without a fight.

With that, he urged his fleet onwards to a costly fight for survival against the powerful Senator Danq.

Oh well. I knew that I'd lose against that kind of OOB, but I didn't see any way of avoiding it. At least I took a fair bit of his fleet into oblivion with me.

I will be back, however. Freedom and prosperity shall return to the galaxy, however long that takes!

EDIT: And I forsee the good Emperor being quite the target next turn, what with his 3 bases and severely depleted fleet

                    Pyrrhic victory

While The Emperor stayed alive and eliminated a dangerous rival, he lost more than half his fleet, and with only three captured bases, would have at least a couple turns to wait before more could be be built.

But at least he could relish in the news that the Senators' two allies had also been attacked - diverting their fleets from allied defense and sparing the Imperium.

                        • needless to say victory was not painless. 14 laser ships were lost. But unlike the Emperor, Zol himself was not attacked, putting him in good position.

Meanwhile, General Ordin and Kit Chuss continued their warmongering rampage, overrunning Captain Imperium in a classic laser duel at ten parsecs.

                          • Even with one side backing off, casualties were still heavy since we are talking maneuvered lasers here.

Total fleet size in the galaxy is now less than what it was last round!

This could be a really short game... are the longer turns making people more aggressive? Definitely more alliances and treachery, we ought to keep with this system.

                              • Well, I'm certainly hoping for a shorter game now, as it will bring the next game sooner and allow me to play again

On a more serious note, the effects of this system have been interesting, but a shortened game greatly reduces the benefits of going for a builder strategy (as I and my allies just found out). It takes four turns for a new base to pay back the cost of construction, and if those four turns take up a significant proportion of the game, then that's a significant disincentive. And I think that's bad for the game; we'll end up with a bunch of massive early-game fleets that have nothing to fight over. Probably the best aspect of that is that it will promote lots of aggression and take lots of people out early, thus bringing the game to another early finish.

                                And so on to infinity.

EDIT: And a small correction - we actually have six players left.
