  • Just Got Space Empires V

Just got the game and have played the demo before that. My initial impression?

    SE5 is to SE4 as MOO3 is to MOO2.

Its a chore to play so far but I'll keep at it. Any other thoughts out there?

Sorry to hear this analogy, as I felt MoO3 (which I returned to the retailer) was not a good game.

Was looking forward to SE5 for years. Now, I will just be playing... I dunno. Oh yeah, I have Homeworld 2 and Jupiter Incident to play through still.

Yeah, that analogy is enough for me to steer clear.

I played the demo and was not thrilled.

I'll probably try it, but not much hope.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

Sad indeed, but anyway I cannot fit it in right now. The bad news is the game never seems to drop in price down the road.

I thought the demo was really bad......I really haven't heard anything good about the game...Supposed to be bug filled with poor AI...I mean this game seems to have been in development forever..

I'll give a more detailed impression with the ups and downs later. I'm currently playing SE4 at work and SE5 at home.

Who needs another space 4x game, when there is GalCiv II

When you don´t like Galciv I or II?

I can´t understand why anyone would call it 4x when it has more in common with a pseudo RTS than MoOII

I never saw GalCiv as a serious space game in the same league as MOO2 or Space Empires 4. It's more on the level of Pax Imperia, Ascendancy, or even Spaceward Ho.

I'm happy to have as many space4x as people are willing to make. I dont know if others feel the same, but i still feel the genre hasn't quite hit the mark yet?
Many of the attempts have brought good ideas to the whole genre, but it still feels like it hasnt all been realised properly in one single game yet?
So i'm waiting for that game, which sadly Space Empires V might not be - any reports yet Vince278?

                          That is most disappointing.

I'm 10 turns into the game so far. It is very slow going. I've played the demo 3 times and never finished a single game. I really don't have time for a step by step account (which may be a good idea).

I like the hex subsector map even though it takes some getting used to. The graphics are nice as well.

I dislike how the controls are arranged. Ship design is more painful. Research (which is more like SE3 than SE4) requires micromanaging to be used effectively. The flag and status display hovering over planets and ships are great at blocking your view and little else.

There's more but I gotta go. I'm planning on finishing this game no matter how long it takes to get the full experience (and as a test on my patience ).

SEV seems non-appealing to me. I played SEIV Deluxe and I would have to start playing again to remember specifics but I always felt the gameplay there had some issues that if fixed would make it a great game. When I read over the changelog of SEIV I realized how long it took them to get SEIV Deluxe to where it is, so I figure it'll take a long time for SEV to mature/get fixed as well.
