I long ago stop online playing as the cheating is rampant and the manners are, well childish is the best I can say.

What's the MP aspect though? Can you play through with other people without trivialising the difficulty?
I also see there is a ladder. How do you have a ladder for an RPG?I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

It's a multiplayer game, of course you can.
They have what they call open battle.net and closed battle net. Though you can play multiplayer on either one (though one requires your friends to connect to your computer or vice versa). I can't remember which is which now.
But I think open battle net is the one where the games and characters are stored on the servers. Supposedly to cut down on cheating. And it has cut down on some cheating.
You can play in a party. They've changed the party rules so much, I'm not sure what they are anymore. It used to be better to play solo with a whole bunch of other people in the game as you got more XP (as monsters were 8 times as tough). But they changed it to give people in parties more XP. And they made penalties if there was too high a level difference (to prevent level 1 characters leaching XP from a level 50 character that kills everything for them).
I can't remember how many people can be in a game at once, but they don't have to be in a party. Basically you send out an invite for a party (or they send you one) and they/you accept. And voila, you are in a party. You don't have to be in the same area (but you won't share XP unless you are close by). So one person can be in town getting supplies while the other is still out in the field battling monsties. But it's generally better to stick together more or less. Sometimes this is annoying as many people have the tendency to fly through the levels and not explore everything (I like to explore everything ). So finding a party that suits you may or may not be easy. It was easy in the early days. But it seems like people only care about power gaming now days and getting to a higher level.
That said, I'm still tempted to reinstall this game and play it. These threads always do that to me. If only it didn't take so long to install...

Dr Spike that is the ticket, get cheap copy and have some fun.
self biased I still play, but not right now. I tend to fire up a character and play it all the way and then I will stop for a few months.
Once in a while I have two ro three characters that I stopped at some point, could be NM or Hell. In that case I may go ahead and finish them as well. That is what I had done recently.
One new character and two partials. So that will probably carry me for a few months, but I will start a game at some point.
I just like to take a break form lots of TBS playing and do some RPG.

I still enjoy it from time to time but I never developed the tolerance needed for MP.
Somehow running into, er, 'challenged' individuals throwing the terms "noob" and "suxxor" around just diminished the level of immersion for me.
I never even finished nightmare in the standard unmodified game though ...
