I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

Diablo2 intrigues me a lot, as it's the only really big MP game in any genre I never got around to playing. I think it's too late now, but every now and again when a thread comes up I ask a few questions.
About the MP ladder option, how does this work? I'm guessing you play through the campaign with other people. However, the levels go to 99, which is probably higher than in the campaign. So what happens when you've done the campaign on one character?

I never made it past 48 myself. Just grew bored of it. My most fun came from levels 10 through 35.

Yes they will be tougher in NM and even tougher in Hell. Your char will have his resistance reduce in NM and further reduced in Hell.
This makes him vulnerable. The monsters are harder to kill because they will tend to get more traits. In NM you start to run into immunes.
In Hell they often will have 2 immunes. The monster that was a snap in normal is now 35 or 70 levels above what you first saw it. It may have immunities as well.
When you go into Hell you tend to be at levels lower than most of the monster, until you can get into the 80's. This means they are harder to hit.
Beleive me, if you found normal fun and you will, going through the same lands in NM will still be exciting. Oh and a lot more dangerous.
It is not hard to get through normal without dying, but tricky to get through NM and nearly impossible in Hell. Of course for new players, I would expect them to die in normal some as they will not know the game well.
One tends to get hooked on the idea of getting another promotion and more skills and looking for better items. Now it can become a drag at times, usually when the going gets very tough.
I have played SP in all three levels in all acts, cows included with each class. So that is a lot of repetive play, but I still had fun.
You can still come back later to take some char and focus on a different skill set. I did a werewolf, but I could try a werebear next time. Many char could have 4 or 5 different playing styles.

What's the MP aspect though? Can you play through with other people without trivialising the difficulty?
I also see there is a ladder. How do you have a ladder for an RPG?
