  • I'm trying to play Planescape: Torment, but it makes my eyes hurt.

It only runs in a measly 640x480 and I guess that's the primary reason why it makes my eyes hurt and all watery. I've been told repeatedly that I'd love this game, but I can't really play it if it keeps making me ache. Any ideas on what to do?

I have a 17" TFT and an old 21" CRT, I've tried to play it in both in both windowed and full screen mode with varied refresh frequencies, colour depth and brightness, but my eyes always start to hurt when I play for a couple of minutes.

Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

Run it in a window that's only a small portion of your screen... sadly this is the best way to do it

I tried that, it made my eyes hurt a bit still, and the text was almost impossible to read.

I turned off the lights in my room and reduced the brightness of my monitor to zero, now it's tolerable. I have a slight background pain, I can feel it behind my eyes, but I forget it as long as I'm deeply involved in the game. Currently running the local FedEx in the Hive.

This sounds like something I should try.

Skanky may have eyes of steel, which have not been mollycoddled for the better part of a year with a nice TFT. He may not even need glasses!

I don't wear glasses, although I do have an old 21" CRT. I'll have to see how I go (pun not intended).

Strange - do you normaly suffer from eye strain when playing computer games? Maybe your eyes just need a rest from looking at a screen?

I'm currently playing Fallout(which looks around 640x480, maybe less!) and Daggerfall(320x200?) and have not had this problem. I'm using a 17" CRT with a high refresh rate(+85hz) for Fallout and a 15" CRT with an average refresh rate(60hz) for Daggerfall.

Neither game gives me any trouble with my eyes.hmm have you checked your refresh rate? If it keeps hurting, even after having a break for a few days i would consinder a trip to my opticians/doctors if i were you, just to be on the safe side.

It sucks you cant get into that game because of this!

Does your TFT have a "pixel blur" or similar function? Mine does, and it turns blocky low-res graphics into a kinda watercolour effect.

My eyes are already fecked, so when it comes time for me to play this one I hope I'll be ok.

I don't, that's the thing. Only when I have played PS:T do my eyes start to get hurting. (I'm going to try again tonight though to see if it was just a fluke or if my eyes were just sore from something else last night).

It's a TFT, so refresh rate isn't really the same thing as on a CRT. A CRT flashes throughout when it refreshes, like a television, but a TFT's pixels refresh only when they need to change. TFTs also generally are easier on the eyes, at least that's what the propaganda is. I get a slight pain if I use any CRT at less than 85 Hz nowadays, though.

After another day of play, my eyes seem to have adjusted. They do however start to hurt a bit when I look at the option menu, the game menu when the game is launched, or the inventory or stuff. Apparently my eyes like the game world better - I guess they've been exposed to it for longer and have adjusted.

Now my eyes are hurting from a different cause - I'm in the utterly dreary, boring and monotone underground catacombs, where every junction and corridor looks like the last one. I want to get out.

Maybe you just don't like the game?
