I think it's too straight forward of a war game. If there was a little something extra aside from raising troops and fighting...

Multiplayer can make up for that, though

Even if you take overwhelming to simply mean good, I can only think of two games that can hold candle to dom2: SMAC and Master of Magic.

Oh, and shame on people who have it but have never played it.
Both MOM and SMAC had good graphics when they came out.

Hmm, not sure I agree with that.

No it didn't... the engine itself was good, but the colors were hurting my eyes

I remember when I bought SMAC, when it first came out in '99.... the graphics were not bad.

For a TBS at the time maybe, i.e. compared to civ 2, but seriously, they were shocking even then. I still love SMAC though

The game that came to my mind was Hearts of Iron II, although I guess pretty much any of the series would do it. Graphics are terrible, but it's all about the strategy, which is nice.

Wing Commander Privateer Sentinel Worlds I (no, there never was a Sentinel Worlds II), Star Flight I & II

                I still play Capitalism II

I was in awe when I first played wing commander... the graphics floored me. Granted I was less then 10 at the time(I think, I played it when it first came out), but I was imrpessed.

                    RGP's: Arena,Daggerfall,RoA,Darklands

                    Sci-Fi: X-wing,TieFighter,AnotherWorld,Exile,Elite

                    Hist/tbs: Colonistation,Ceasar2,Castles(1+2),Lords of the Realm.

I had Wing Commander on my Amiga. For a game that moved at about a max of 15fps it was still pretty mindblowing

Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Not as good as oblivion. Still, not bad.

Not bad? I thought this was a game released in 2000 (which would be ok for back then), not 2006!

Dominions 2 sucked. There was a lot of complexity.. not much game.

Methinks the Dominions brigade will come down on you like a tonne of bricks for pointing that out.
