You mean you should punish Sigil (who's getting 90% of the money) for what SOE might have done?

Well, everyone has the right to vote with his wallet. And I have the right to point and laugh, so there.

My next door neighbour would probably do the same. Perhaps coincidentally, he is 6 years old.

Bingo, thats the point I have been trying to get across, I think vanguard is going to be a good game if you want to endlessly grind like the old EQ If thats your cup of tea, I dont think you will find a better game out there.

I just think Sigil made a bad decision in there business partners. And I think to some extent it is going to hurt there final numbers. I know quite a few SWG refugees (I hang out at one of the refugee sites) and as soon as the announcement was made that SOE had something to do with Vanguard the interest in that game plummeted (at least amongst the refugees). And this demographic is LOOKING for a new MMORPG fix.

But thats just me, I hope you all enjoy the game

The closest game to (old) SWG I have seen is Saga of Ryzom. There also, it is all about being a world. They don't have quite as many nonCombat classes, but 1/2 their classes aren't combat focused (Crafting and Mining).

Actually, they aren't classes, more like skill trees.

(it is a completly open skill system, set along 4 lines (And you can do it all), crafting, mining, magic, and fight are the 4 skill lines))

Don't worry, Ralphie gets it, he's just a little awkward.

I didn't play SWG, I'm not too fond of futuristic stuff. And yes, I heard that a disaster struck it. So what? If a game begins to suck, I walk away and look for greener pastures. I left EQ2 as soon as it begun to suck, too.

Sigil had to look for a partner after they bought the publishing rights back from Microsoft. I find this decision good, because this way they can release the game when they consider it done and not when the publisher demands it (hello Civ3). Which MS, it would have been released early and in a very sorry state, guaranteed.

A company of developers can with some hardship publish a game, but for the billing and hosting part you need an infrastructure, which is quite an investment. So either Sigil does that investment (and thus makes the game more expensive), or they buy that service from another company. Which is exactly what they did.

Some may be unhappy, that it is SOE, but there are worse choices out there. Imagine Blizzard would do the server hosting...

For those of you who find it difficult to spot the oh so subtle connotation that was a WoW crack.

Though I'd imagine Blizzard would be fine if they hadn't made a game that attracts 50 times the likely playerbase for VG.

Bored to wait in the queue Spikie?

                    Comment

                    • I have never waited more than a few minutes actually, and I am on a popular server. I think in Europe it works better than in the US, as they partly learnt their lesson from the earlier US release.

                      • Truth to be told, I never had to wait at all.

                        • So, how come VG hasn't saved MMOs yet?

                          Comment

                          • Ignoring obvious troll, it will never save MMOs. That's a silly hype, and both of us know it. I will be more than happy if it brings back the pre-Luclin EQ feeling, before mudflation and travel shortcuts (i.e. the part of EQ, which Brian designed), with better graphics and some new concepts.

That aside, why don't you come to the Berlin Polymeet, Spikie? There's a thread in the OT, in case you're interested.

                            • I'd be scared you'd beat me up for my trolling.

                              • I thought my bounties on you were made rather surreptitiously.

For VG to have saved MMOs, it would need to be released.
The next round of betas - guilds - should be opening at the end of this month, so hopefully soon...
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
