Nice to know that you have the free time. I should thank you though-- Looking for you led me to this forum and this game which looks fascinating. I hope to observe the next one (perhaps get some tips) and then join the next one after that.
You don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

      • Flubber - I'd just go ahead and join. It's a pretty simple game to play [though it takes a lifetime to master : othello :]

I read the basic rules through and can see where there is both skill and some luck (raise your shield this turn or next) involved. I do need read them again although some basics are starting to sink in.

The mechanics that seem odd/different to me is how two large fleets can fight and the bigger wins with ZERO damage. I can understand how a winning order of battle can make a difference but it also seems that if you get a clear numerical superiority, you can win repeatedly without losses. At least thats what seems to be happening in this game-- The massive combined fleet can take out fleet after fleet without loss .

          • That's where the diplomacy comes in; finding the right allies is crucial, as one overlord alone cannot win. And yet, allies cannot win together, so there must only be one.

Well, that seems to be a development of this game.

As you might have figured out, M leads to a stronger attack the next round. It can be placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, or 5th slot in the order of battle. Generally it goes first or second, because you want to maneuver your strongest weapon.

This game, people have all been using Mxx instead of xMx to start. A mismatch of xMx and Mxx can lead to catastrophic losses on both sides. People seem to be avoiding this situation. It's an interesting equilibrium that's been reached.

Mxx vs xMx, large casualties on both sides
Mxx vs Mxx, total victory/total defeat
xMx vs xMx, total victory/total defeat

I think when Mxx became the norm this game, people decided to use it almost exclusively. They'd rather play for total defeat or victory than try to inflict the most casualties possible. xMx could have become the equilibrium too, but it seems Mxx reached a tipping point this game.

That part I understood. I have to reread the sections on allied attack though. It seems such a powerful weapon that I was surprised not to see even more of them.

Can three players do an allied attack ?

Yes. With alliances, though, there is always a chance of betrayal.

Speaking of which, all orders are in. Processing starts now.
