Does anyone think Rome Total War is any good
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Never really played it - for a while I was waiting for them to fix the game breaking bugs they denied existed, and then the moment was past and I was playing other games.

I don't care for R:TW all that much. I play it very occasionally but to me it feels like a dumbed down version of Medieval but with prettier graphics.

If I had missed it altogether I know now I wouldn't be missing much.

I just hope that M:TW 2 is closer to M:TW than to R:TW!

Steel Panthers 2 (or 1 for that matter). tactical modern combat. Don't know if it works with XP though. Keep meaning to try. Probably outside your time frame though.

            Imperialism2

Rising Sun ( or any of the Talonsoft games), i prefer rising sun though just because the far east doesn't have that many games. The only other one i can think of is Pacific General.

Trade Empires. Not a war game but one i found interesting.

Imp2 i already have. Thats pre2000 I think. Runs smoothly on the dino, at any rate.

Rising Sun - interesting choice. I actually bought that, and tried to run it - dino specs should have been ok. But it crashed after the intro movie. Consistently. I returned it to EB (those were the days). I later bought Divided Ground, the fourth game in the Campaign series (after Eastern Front, Western Front, and RS) DG covers the Arab-Israeli wars. It also did not run, but this time I was stuck with it. Its actually one im gonna try on the laptop, once im tired of playing the Paradox games ive got. Again, it should have run on the dino, based on the specs. (note - ive heard DG was inferior to EF, WF, and RS, having been made after Tiller left Talonsoft)

I have most of the talon soft games.. they generally required a patch to be playable..

and I didn't play them enough based upon how much I spent

the free version of steal panthers is arguably the best.... (is almost a gig download though)

                  combat mission was suggested?

LotM would like Combat Mission I am sure. I think I've mentioned it in the past and it's on his list.

yes, but repetition certainly helps it sink in

For more tactical games I would recomend Commandos 2 and Silent Storm.

Playing Silent Storm at the moment but pretty hefty system requirements that may be beyond some of LOTM's machines. Not quite as much fun as X-com but good physics engine, graphics and smart AI (most of the time). On the downside i miss the lack of a tech tree or any finance aspect to managing your supplies/weapons.
