  • Sims 2

Almost two years ago, I tried playing the original Sims game by borrowing it from a friend. I thought it would be fun, so I played it a couple of times but I soon got bored with the game -- too much of a "watching an aquarium" feel.

So now that Sims 2 has three titles out and after reading the boxes in the stores where I have seen them, I'm wondering if Sims 2 is actually a substantial improvement over the original? Does anyone here own Sims 2 who can tell me if this game is worth its price? Or anyone who has played it a few times?

Tell me the good, the bad, the ugly.

Judging from all the past posts - you won't like it if you didn't like the general feel and concept of the original.

I tried playing the original, too, I think I lasted several hours, waiting to see if it would get fun, then I realised that it's how the game is supposed to be, to me, mind-numbingly boring.

If you are goal-oriented then Sims 2 has a better chance at holding your interest. Each sim has wants and needs and such that you can fulfill each day, like wanting to eat a bowl of chilli for instance, that makes them happier.

Of course, underneath this it is still the same game as the original. If you didn't like that concept, it is unlikely you will like the sequal.

MrFun, you should send a long PM to DrSpike asking him to explain - in detail - his experiences with the Sims...all of them, not just Sims2.

I'm sure he will only be to happy to comply.

Or just let him see this thread. Whilst we all know Spikie is loathe to make negative comments regarding the Sims, I'm sure that he will do his best to help MrFun with his request. You know, for the good of the forum.

It's harder to ignore a PM.

Its harder for Spikie to ignore a +1.

If you didn't like the Sims you probably wouldn't enjoy Sims 2. There are some improvements with the AI, and graphics of course but its basically the same game.

The time I spent with the Sims 2 was mostly in just building houses and such with the tools more then playing with actual Sims. I enjoy designing houses but the Sims themselves get boring.

From what I saw at EB games there is all ready a 4th? Expansion coming in April for the Sims 2. They really waste no time churning those out.

The house building tools are better in The Sims 2

But the basic game is still the same (with a few small changes), so if you didn't like the first one, then this one is not for you either

Wow, the consensus is loud and clear on this question. I think I will avoid buying Sims 2 now.

pretty much the same as the first one. Just better graphics.

And as with the first game, I played it for about a month, and grew bored of it. I had no desire to get any expansions (as with the first game)

Wow, you can play it for a month before growing bored of it? I would say that a game that keeps me entertained for month is worth it. Not great, but worth it. Sims couldn't keep me entertained for an evening, though.

yeah I don't regret the purchase. But RPG's and TBS games such as Civ3 and Civ4 have kept me entertained way longer than that.

But I got over 50 hours of gameplay from the Sims2.
