There's an elevated ledge somewhere you can jump on from above. You're out of her reach, so she can't harm you with the Umbra sword, while you can snipe her to death.

My gripe with both approaches is, that they're just cheap AI exploits and somewhat ruin immersion.
How is running a cheap AI exploit?! It's a sound tactical decision (retreat... until you can quaff some more potions or cast healing spells).

Running into Umbra is quite a surprise... especially the first 5 times she kicks your ass (and I was Level 13)!!

This will happen if you are low on fatigue or it just ran out. This will happen if you have a low recovery rate and you are attacking like crazy or did too many power attacks. So keep an eye on it and don't do a power attack if it's too low.

I enjoy playin the game, but to be honest I expected more immersion; roads for example are still devoid of travellers, merchants etc, except for imperial soldiers of course. Dungeons are also a bit dull apart from the fighting of course. Every dungeon is different (that's better than in Morrowind where every dungeon was a clone of one another), but there's never a story or special event, surprise or something similar in stock for an unsuspecting adventurer. Killing skeletons is cool, but I've done that a zillion times already you see
Sounds like you need to move on. If you've just stuck around the Imperial City to Chorral then you're missing out a lot of variety. There are some realy cool quests in Anivl for example. When travelling the roads I've run into some highwaymen trying to rob me. And I found this chick travelling between IC and Chorral and she was actually a trainer in Athletics or some such. Sweet, trained that up as much as I could afford at the time. I've seen her again from time to time.

        • If you caught Vampirism, hopefully you aren't a full vampire yet. If you're not, go pray at an altar in any chapel and you'll be cured. If you are a full vampire though (have had dreams), then it sucks for you. The quest to get cured then is very hard and long, and even moreso for good characters. It took me three and a half realtime days to do that quest.

Oblivion is quite alive, I think - some people travel between cities, sometimes you see them on the road, there are other adventurers exploring dungeons sometimes, or highwaymen trying to rob you. To me, it's much more immersive than Morrowind. Morrowind was very immersive, but it really felt like a static world where I was the only one ever doing anything. Oblivion actually feels like all those people are living there.

          • Well, we've been playing different games then

I haven't seen other thieves rob people, or others in dungeons so far. And I haven't seen thieves rob me either
If you are talking about bandits on the roads however, yeah there's plenty. But hey: empty roads stacked with bandits isn't very logical; who are they going to rob then?

I have gotten the disease of course, but I'm a vampire by now. I didn't know I would turn into one after 1 hour of resting. Oh well, so far I have only gotten better stats, no disadvantages or anything. My character does look entirely different though, and he has aged quite a bit (probably have to feed some way or another, but then again I haven't got any disadvantages so to hell with that ).

Even though I look differently (especially the eyes look evil ) people don't seem to notice that.

And where the hell is that fence Ongar (iirc) in the Imperial city!? I need to sell him some stolen goods to get a job, but he's nowhere to be seen, and I've been paying regular visits to the Waterfront district! :/

              • Well, I took about 10 minutes out of playing to go ahead and hit the next milestone in Conjuration a bit ago. I went from 70 to 75 skill, and now I can summon the really big baddies. I haven't used a Spider Daedra in combat yet, but the Frost Atronach is pretty badass. It will heal itself after the fight is over, too! The only real thing is the duration and mana cost. At a 75 skill, Summon Frost Atronach is 180 magicka or thereabouts, and lasts for 35 seconds. Perhaps an Altmer with a much larger mana pool might be able to make a custom version with a duration of longer than base.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Indeed, haven't bothered going to Kvatch yet, I keep on passing by caves and ruins etc

Even at 100 conjuration, I still primarily conjure Daedroth... cheap manawise (70 for 30 secs or so) and pretty strong. I'll summon liches to deal with ghosts, but other than that, it's Daedroth all the way I've tried out others, but they just don't cut it ...

Because they don't follow their deadly wounded adversary, or get stuck at some wall?

                          • Just did a quest that left me feelng mildly annoyed. It's the one with the women in anvil who are robbing men ...

                            Spoiler:

I am a female character, and they asked me to join them. I figured i'd get a chance to actually join them ... instead, only options in conversation were to attack them. Bah. This is the one way oblivion really sucks, sadly

Don't have either of these problems. And, tbh, if you're able to get on a ledge they can't climb, that's sound strategy, not an exploit.

                              • Just closed the Oblivion Gate and now I need to decide if I want to continue to liberate the city and then take the heir back or just take the heir back. I'm having a problem leveling because I'm technically a mage but I haven't really figured out how to effectively use magic yet. Instead I've just been hacking and slashing my way through the quest. I spent a good amount of time in the Capital building up my other skills so now I'm a pretty good fighter but I'm still only level 2. :/

There was a lot of saving and restarting to get my weak ass character through all those demons.
