  • X-Com

I downloaded the early nineties classic UFO: Enemy Unknown (AKA X-com: UFO defence) the other day and it's a real blast, despite the ancient graphics and archaic interface. In case you've not heard of it, it's a tactics/strategy game with you defending Earth in 1999 against an insidious alien invasion. The game has two main modes. The geoscape is a multi-speed real time map of the Earth, with cities, bases, ships, crash sites, significant countries etc. The battlescape is where the main part of the game takes place, with the player commanding a small squad of special forces to fight the aliens wherever they appear.

What struck me about it is how incredibly ahead of its time it is - it's packed with features that seem more 2004 than 1994. Destroyable scenery, emergent gameplay, RPGesque stats/equipment, a tense, survival horror atmosphere - it's filled with excellent stuff.

It's real shame that the X-Com series has died. This game would fly off the shelves with only a new lick of graphical paint and a modern interface. Everything else is bang up to date.

Actually, there are games out that try to do this classic justice.

    UFO: Aftermath
    UFO: Aftershock

But they don't seem to get it quite right.

Here be the old thread in case you are interested.

I'm sorry, didn't you know that real time requires less of an AI.

I've got all 3 but sadly failed to get them working on my XP boxes.

Another game that captures some of the Xcom magic is silent storm but it lacks the strategic side such as a tech tree or money.

I was going to tell you to hit The Underdogs and download it, but it appears they have lost their domain name. At least, going to the old URL, it is now trying to sell me cheap airfare. They had a version of X-Com that was made for Windows 95, and will run on XP. I play it still.

The reason so many people haven't heard of it, is that it came out back in 1993. How many of the current generation of computer gamers were computer gamers 13 years ago?

The domain works for me, at least right now. Btw, posting a link to the Lower Canines is not condoned on this forum. Alas.

                            Their ip works.

You can find it in wikipedia, but none of the downloads will work.

Hmm, perhaps the name server thingy hasn't updated for me, and it still directs to the IP.
