What struck me about it is how incredibly ahead of its time it is - it's packed with features that seem more 2004 than 1994. Destroyable scenery, emergent gameplay, RPGesque stats/equipment, a tense, survival horror atmosphere - it's filled with excellent stuff.
It's real shame that the X-Com series has died. This game would fly off the shelves with only a new lick of graphical paint and a modern interface. Everything else is bang up to date.
If they come up with I remake I would like to have an expanded tech tree and multiple ways to beat the aliens.
Other than that it's still excellent stuff. Especially the atmosphere during them night terror missions. Marvelous.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

You can find the games on Amazon, including the Collector's Pack which has all three. Unforunately it appears that it's become worth a lot of money - most sellers on Amazon were asking for over 100 dollars. I know I bought the first two after 1998 in the "old games" area of EB. I got the third a couple years ago from Amazon for a reasonable price. I think I spent $30 total.
When I tried playing the first one again it worked but ran way too fast. I think I tried using the processor speed thing in one of those Dos Emulator programs but I couldn't get it to work right.I never know their names, But i smile just the same

Let me see if I can remember this correctly, but it was a simple solution to that one for me (as I posted a while back, I wasn't playing the DOS version but the later Win 95 version). I had to override the refresh rate and force it to something like 60-80hz. That slowed it down to appropriate progression.Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

There is UFO: Alien invasion which is a sort of remake done with quake2 engine. I haven´t tried it myself though.Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

That site has much useful info on getting old games running.
And for those having trouble getting Xcom(DOS version) to run don't 'abandonia' hope '.com' with me and check the strategy section to help you with a windows friendly version.
I break a self imposed rule with this game - its just too important a milestone in computer gaming to be forgotten about imho.

What's crazy is how well it holds up. It doesn't matter that there aren't a million ways to win or snazzy graphics. It looks pretty good and is challenging. Well, I find it challenging.I never know their names, But i smile just the same

The origonal is the best. Its one of the all time great computer games. Sadly all other versions(including its sequels) pale in comparison crazy huh? you would have thought it would have been snapped up.
And you need all the game componants to 'better' the origonal, using 3D but not including the base building isn't the way to do it imho.
