What was wrong with M2TW? The reviews were very positive. Even here, IIRC.
There were bugs but that wasnt the problem for me.
With Rome, the TW series began the move from tactical real time battles to "real time strategy". In other words, the game focus changed from unit combat based upon understandable tactical considerations to a graphics-oriented RTS "clickfest". M2TW shared the same graphics-driven game engine and the tactical "realism" became even more abysmal to the point where a ballista knocked down one of my (stone) castle walls and I quit prior to finishing a single campaign (there were lots of other stupidities but that was the final straw).
The next incarnation is called Empire total war and there is some hope, based upon the designers frequent comments on these issues, that they have listened to the fan base and moved the game back toward realistic tactical unit combat (which is what gave them a piece of the market in the first place).
Its unclear whether ETW will have SecuRoM but given the very clear message from the majority of the fanbase that we wont buy it, there are indications that it will have a different protection system.
You should have played Rome Total Realism then, a mod.
No more druids, gladiators etc.

My understanding is that this will most likely be a Sega decision. I actualy talked to the guy making those and well i think his impression was that i was some kind of 'fringe' loon.
I explained my love of the series(and FM also) and that sadly due to SecuRoM I didn't buy MTW II expansion nor could buy any future game in the series that was possibly able to damage my computer.
During our conversation on this he did mention that they probably wouldn't use the same protection(in the seires) as it cost them a lot but was cracked by day of release, but if they have no other good alternatives they may well use the same?
We will have to wait and see, and I really wish this info was a legal requirement for games companies to publish on their game boxes and on their websites.
hmmm Brad Wardell needs to add that to his list of fair gaming practises.....so those that dont agree not to put nasty sh*t(DRM's) on our computers will atleast warn us their product could cost us some new hardware!

SEGA owns CA so I would've thought it was their decision.
