  • 3 new Sid Games announced

And none of them are that original unfortunantly
All aboard for Sid Meier's Railroads!
Civilization designer looks to reinvent Railroad Tycoon franchise with PC strategy sim this fall.

Sid Meier is set to be inducted into the Walk of Game tonight for a career's worth of highly regarded PC strategy games including Civilization, Pirates!, and Alpha Centauri. He doesn't seem content to rest on his laurels; this morning, 2K Games announced that it would be publishing the next game in the developer's body of work, Sid Meier's Railroads! for the PC.

Currently in development at Firaxis Games (Take-Two Interactive's recently acquired studio, of which Meier is director of creative development), Railroads! is the next installment in the Railroad Tycoon PC strategy game series.

"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this game back home," Meier said in a statement. "Railroads is near and dear to our hearts, and we're looking forward to delivering the endlessly fun gameplay experience fans of our games have come to expect."

Sid Meier's Railroads! will challenge players to create their own railroad empires and keep them up to date with the times. Working with trains ranging from steam-powered locomotives to modern diesel and electric trains, players will not only have to worry about getting cargo to its destination on time, but will also have to worry about business rivals and robber barons, among other things. 2K is promising a variety of gameplay options for Railroads! (including real-time LAN and Internet play), as well as a "sand-box" modeling mode.

Sid Meier's Railroads! has not yet been rated. It is scheduled for release this fall.
    Warlords overrun Civilization IV
First expansion for top strategy series will have military focus, introduce six new scenarios, new units, and new civilizations.

Since it was released last October, Civilization IV has never fallen off NPD Funworld's weekly list of top 10 best-selling PC games, selling over a million copies. The latest installment in Firaxis' long-running strategy series was also singled out by Firaxis owner Take-Two Interactive as being one of its best-selling titles during its last financial quarter.

Hoping to further capitalize on Civilization IV's success, Take-Two subsidiary 2K Games announced today that it will soon release the game's first expansion pack. Titled Civilization IV: Warlords, the expansion "pays homage to some of history's greatest military leaders." Though no Hannibals, Khans, Napoleons, Lees, Rommels, Pattons, or Schwarzkopfs were mentioned, the game promises the introduction of new Warlord units which will help turn the tide of battle in players' favor.

As has been the case with other Civilization expansions, Warlords will introduce a bevy of new units, resources, leaders, civilizations, and wonders of the world. However, 2K Games' announcement did not mention anything specific, other than there would be "six new scenarios" that give "players the chance to change the course of history."

As yet-unrated and un-priced, Civilization IV: Warlords will be released this summer. It will require the original game, which was named GameSpot's Best PC Game of 2005, to play.
Firefly and Firaxis build CivCity: Rome
New city-building strategy game for PCs lets players control rise and/or fall of imperial seat of power.

The real Rome wasn't built in a day, but gamers will get the chance to build their own Rome in the course of an afternoon with 2K Games' upcoming release of CivCity: Rome.

2K Games is saying that the city-building PC strategy game is "inspired by the world of Sid Meier's Civilization," so it's handy that developer Firefly Studios (creators of the Stronghold franchise) is working on CivCity with Firaxis Games, Meier's current employer.

"Firefly has a long history with the city-building genre," Firefly Studios director Simon Bradbury said in a statement. "CivCity: Rome is our latest take on the theme, and with the influence of Civilization, it's certain to be the best yet."

Starting almost from scratch, CivCity players will build an imperial megalopolis with hundreds of buildings, from legionnaire forts and gladiatorial schools to amphitheatres and the circus maximus.

CivCity: Rome is scheduled for a PC release this summer. No date or rating information has been released.

Yeah...it'll be fun but it's merging the title heavy Ceasar series with the title heavy SimCity series basically.

Aren't most "original" games basically mergers of existing genres?

Yeah, kinda...but but SimCity and Ceasar were basically the two most similar games in their subgenre with Railroad Tycoon being the next closest.

Well this is interesting, I happen to really like the transport empire and city builder genre's, so no complaints from me.

                              Gamespot and IGN.

Gamespy is silent on the issue. Odd because they are usually fairly up to date.
